Markham, Marshall

First Generation

1. Lewis1 Markham (#256) was born in Glamorgan, Wales maybe around 1636.(1)

He married Jane (Markham). (Jane (Markham) is #6336.) Jane was born maybe around 1640. (Additional notes for Jane (Markham)(2))

22 Dec 1658 Lewis Markham of St. Fagans, Glamorgan, was bound to William Hayman to serve 4 years in Barbados.(3)

Sometime after 1660 he made his way to Virginia, by means yet undiscovered. He settled in Westmoreland County, where became involved in contracting bonded servants from his home area of Wales and Bristol to come to Virginia. Evidently he worked as a middleman, as no grant of land has been discovered in his name in return for the transport of these people.

1 Nov 1676 four men and a woman were recorded as being apprenticed in Bristol to go to Virginia in the service of Lewis Markham. Their surnames are common in Wales; no indication of their origins was given.(4)

On 15 Nov and 30 Nov 1676 two more four year apprentices to Lewis Markham were recorded, to travel in the same ship.(5)

16 Sept 1685 another list of those apprenticed in Bristol to serve Lewis Markham in Virginia for terms of four or six years was more informative. The three men and three women were all from Welsh towns, two explicitly from Glamorgan, and one even from Lewis Markham's village of origin, St. Fagan. Lewis must have spoken eloquently to his former neighbors of opportunity in the New World.(6)

Lewis Markham and Jane (Markham) had the following child:

Second Generation

2. Lewis2 Markham (Lewis1)(7) (#5823) was born in Virginia maybe around 1660. Lewis died early in 1713 at age 52.

He married Elizabeth (Markham). (Elizabeth (Markham) is #9040.) Elizabeth was born maybe around 1665.

9 Feb 1697/8 Lewis received a grant of 100 acres of land, adjacent to Richard Brown's property in Westmoreland Co, VA.(8) He was named to the Quorum of of Westmoreland County 8 June 1699.(9) He was named Sheriff of Westmoreland County 25 April 1702.(10) Lewis Markham was a Justice of Westmoreland County 8 July 1702.(11) On 1 Dec 1708 Lewis Markham "of Westmoreland Co. in Forest in said Co." was granted 151.5 acres on path to Nanjattico, adjacent property of Mr. Stark and William Baltrop.(12)

Lewis Markham wrote his will 15 March 1712/3 in Westmoreland Co, VA.(13) He made bequests to Joseph Bayley and his wife Ann, and to his eight children, of whom the only one named was William, who was to receive the plantation at Mattoax at the death of Lewis's wife Elizabeth.

Lewis's estate was probated 13 June 1713 in Westmoreland Co, VA.(14)

He was a prominent attorney in Westmoreland County.

Lewis Markham and Elizabeth (Markham) had the following children:

Third Generation

4. Elizabeth3 Markham (Lewis2, Lewis1) (#5824) was born in maybe, Alexandria, VA about 1704.(16) Elizabeth died 1775 in Fauquier Co, VA, at age 71.(17)

She married John Marshall about 1722. (John Marshall is #5825.) John was born around 1700 in Westmoreland Co, VA. John was the son of Thomas Marshall and Martha (Marshall). John died April 1752 at age 51.

Elizabeth Markham and John Marshall had the following child:

Fourth Generation

5. Thomas4 Marshall (Elizabeth3 Markham, Lewis2, Lewis1) (#5826) was born in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co, VA 2 April 1730.(18) Thomas died 22 June 1802 in Washington, Mason Co, KY, at age 72.(19)

He married Mary Randolph Keith 1754 in Fauquier Co, VA.(20) (Mary Randolph Keith is #5926.) Mary was born 28 April 1737 in Fauquier Co, VA.(21) Mary died 19 Sept 1809 in Mason Co, KY, at age 72.(22)

Thomas Marshall and Mary Randolph Keith had the following child:
