Marckhaum, Marcum, Markham
1. Collector1 Marckhaum of Bedford Co. VA (#595) (living status unknown).
Collector Marckhaum of Bedford Co. VA had the following children:
2. Ancestor2 Markham of Bedford Co. VA (Collector1 Marckhaum) (#8018) birth date unknown.
This is a collector to separate the generations found in the records of Bedford Co. VA.
Ancestor Markham of Bedford Co. VA had the following child:
-
6
i.
Jessee3 Markham of Bedford Co. VA (#8019) was born between 1795 and 1800. In the
1820 Census, Jessee was listed as a head of household engaged in agriculture in Bedford Co, VA.(2) He was 18-25, his wife 16-25, with two girls under age 10.
In the 1830 Census, Jessee was listed as a head of household in Campbell Co, VA.(3) He was in his 30s, his wife in her 20s, with a girl 10-14, a boy and two girls 5-9, three girls under age
5, a female slave 10-23, and one slave girle under age 10.
In the 1840 Census, Jessee was listed as a head of household in Lee Co, VA.(4) He was in his 40s. In his household were a young man and two young women in their 20s, two girls 15-19, a
boy and two girls 10-14, a boy and a girl 5-9, and two boys under age 5. There were five slaves - one woman 24-35, and two boys and two
girls under age 10. Two persons were engaged in agriculture.
3. Blackwater2 Marckhaum Ancestor (Collector1) (#7957) was born probably before 1737.
Those here listed as his children all had property on the north branch of Blackwater River between 1778 and 1785
in that part of Bedford County that later was split off to become Franklin County.
It seems very likely that these men are of
the same family. However, their ages are not known; one or two could be of an older generation than the other.
Blackwater Marckhaum Ancestor had the following children:
-
7
i.
William Abner3 Markham of Bedford Co. VA (#7955) was born before 1758. In 1778 a
survey recorded William Abner Markham of Bedford Co. VA had 180 acres adj Farlon/Huggins on north branch Blackwater River in Bedford
Co, VA.(5)
-
8
ii.
Thomas Marcum of Bedford Co. VA (#7956) was born before 1758. In 1778 a survey recorded Thomas Marcum of Bedford
Co. VA had 95 acres joining Farlon on north branches Blackwater River in Bedford Co, VA.(6) In 1779 Thomas sold to William Bolding 100 acres N. side of Blackwater River adj Ray in Bedford Co,
VA.(7) In 1779 Thomas purchased from Thomas Farley 100
acres N. side of Blackwater River adj Ray in Bedford Co, VA.(8)
-

iii.
Abner Marcum of Bedford Co. VA (#6716) was born probably before 1760. He married Mary
(Marcum). (Mary (Marcum) is #7954.) Mary was born probably before 1768.
16 Sept 1785 Abner Marcum of Bedford Co. VA and his wife Mary sold for 100 pounds 180 acres on the North Branch of Blackwater
River in Bedford Co, VA.(9) In 1787 Abner was taxed for
himself with no property in the District of Moses Greer in Franklin Co, VA.(10) Abner was on List "A." Also in Franklin County, on List "B" in the District of Robert Hairston, were
James, John, Thomas, and William Markham, each taxed on a number of horses and cattle.(11)
In the 1790 Census, Abner was listed as a head of household in Burke Co, NC.(12) In his household, he was the only male over age 16. There were five boys under 16 and four females.
This man must have been at least age 21 when he was taxed in Franklin Co. VA in 1787. He may have had eight
children when the 1790 census found him in Burke Co. NC. If so, he must have been at least age 30 then, making him old enough to be the
father of Abner Marcum of Bedford Co. TN.
He could possibly be the same as Abner Markham, the age 16 and over taxpayer in Lee Co. VA in 1795.
But all those children in
1790 probably imply that he's too old to have been the Abner Markham who was age 26-44 in the 1810 census
of Green Co. KY.
5. John2 Markham of Bedford Co. VA (Collector1 Marckhaum) (#8016) was born between 1776 and 1784. He was 26-44 in both
the 1810 and 1820 census John died about 1842 in Barren Co, KY, at age unknown.(13)
He married Elizabeth Clayton 5 Apr 1806 in Bedford Co, VA.(14) (Elizabeth Clayton is #8694.) Elizabeth was born probably before 1779.
In the 1810 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(15) He was 26-44, his wife 16-25, with two girls under age 10 and one slave.
In the 1820 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(16) He and his wife were age 26-44, with two girls 10-14 and two girls under age 10. Twenty two persons were
engaged in agriculture; the household included forty one slaves of various ages.
In the 1830 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(17) He and his wife were in their 40s, with a girl 10-14, a boy 5-9, and two boys under age 5. There was a
slave woman 24-35 and a male 10-23.
This John Markham who appears in the early records of Bedford County is listed
by researcher Brenda Marble as John Markham son of Thomas Markham of Bedford County, the Revolutionary
War soldier. However, the 1810 census declares this John to have been age 26-44, and therefore born at least a year prior to the marriage if
Thomas Markham and Nelly Wilkerson in December of 1785.
John Markham of Bedford Co. VA and Elizabeth Clayton had the following children:
-
10
i.
Louisa3 Markham (#8695). She married Ambrose
King.(18) (Ambrose King is #8696.)
-
11
ii.
Henry Ann Markham (#8697). She married Nelson Crawford DeWitt.(19) (Nelson Crawford DeWitt is #8698.)
