Marcum, Markham
1. Collector1 Markham of Lee Co. VA (#618) (living status unknown).
Collector Markham of Lee Co. VA had the following children:
-
4
iii.
Josiah Marcum of Lee Co. VA (#8189) was born before 1780. In 1795 Josiah was taxed for himself, being a white
male 16 and over, and two horses in Lee Co, VA.(1)
There is some indication that Josiah Marcum, the Revolutionary War veteran born
in 1759, may not have left his home in Montgomery / Kanawha / Cabell Counties in Virginia.
If there's really a second Josiah in
Southwestern Virginia, he's probably the same as Josiah Markrum, the 1799 taxpayer of Hawkins County,
Tennessee.
On the other hand, although he's generally thought to be born in the 1790s, the upper limit of age from the 1820
census, where he's listed as 26-44, might qualify the well known Josiah Markham of later records of Lee
County to be the same as this man.
-
5
iv.
Abner Marcum of Lee Co. VA (#8190) was born before 1780. In 1795 Abner was taxed for himself, being a white male
16 and over, and one horse in Lee Co, VA.(2)
It would seem that this might be the same man as Abner Markham, the 1787
taxpayer of Franklin Co. VA and 1790 resident of Burke Co. NC. In 1790 Abner Marcum of Burke Co. NC appeared to have as many as eight
children, including five boys under age 16. Either there is no trace of them in Lee County, or the other two taxpayers would be his sons.
He would be of an age to be the same as Abner Markham who was listed as age 26-44 in the
census of Green Co. KY in 1810. This might be the same as Abner Markham who was listed as age 26-44 in the
census of Bedford Co. TN in 1820.
He may very likely be the father of Abner Markham, the War
of 1812 veteran, who was said to have been born in Virginia in 1795.

v.
James Marcum of Lee Co. VA (#8191) was born before 1780. In 1795 James was taxed for himself, being a white male
16 and over, and one horse in Lee Co, VA.(3)
2. Ancestor2 Markham of Lee Co. VA (Collector1) (#7968) birth date unknown.
Ancestor Markham of Lee Co. VA had the following children:
-
8
ii.
Reuben Markham of Lee Co. VA (#7970) was born between 1776 and 1794. In 1810 Reuben was taxed for himself and one
horse in Lee Co, VA.(4) 1820 1820 probably enumerates
Reuben at 44 years of age as a resident in the household of Samuel Markham of Lee Co. VA in Lee Co, VA.(5) In Samuel's household were two men and two women age 26-44, with a boy
and four girls under age 10. Not far away was Josiah Markum, also age 26-44.
-
11

3. Husband of Mary2 Markham of Lee Co. VA (Collector1) (#8008) was born around 1775.
He married Mary (Markham). (Mary (Markham) is #8009.) Mary was born circa 1777 in North
Carolina. In 1840 the US Census probably enumerates Mary at 63 years of age as a resident of the household of William
Markham in Lee Co, VA.(8) She was listed as a household
member of William Markham's house in the Census of 1850 in Lee Co, VA.(9)
Researcher Beverly Mathews has
speculated that this may be Abner Markham who was in Bedford County, VA in 1785 and Burke Co. NC in 1790.
Husband of Mary Markham of Lee Co. VA and Mary (Markham) had the following child:
7. Son of Ancestor3 Markham of Lee Co. VA (Ancestor2, Collector1)
(#7972) birth date unknown.
This is a collector for Markhams of unknown parents who were found in the 1850 census of Lee Co. VA.

10. Samuel3 Markham of Lee Co. VA (Ancestor2, Collector1)
(#7969) was born between 1791 and 1794. Samuel died probably before 1850 in maybe, Lee Co. VA, at age unknown.
He married twice. He married First_wife of Samuel (Markham). Given as parents in death notice of son
William (First_wife of Samuel (Markham) is #8192.)
First_wife was born between 1791 and 1800. First_wife died before 1840 in probably, Lee Co, VA, at age unknown.
It's a puzzle to figure out just how many children Samuel and his first wife had, let alone their identities. In
the 1820 census, they were age 26-44, and there was another couple of the same age in their household. Who can say to which couple the boy
and four girls under age 10 belonged? Again, in the 1830 census, there are several children of various ages, of which the older ones do
match the ages of the 1820 children - does this mean all of those were Samuel's? In the 1840 census there was a boy under age 5, who might
be Clarinda's William, born in 1840, or he might not.
He married Clarinda (Markham). (Clarinda (Markham) is #7974.) Clarinda was born circa 1816 in
Virginia. In the Census of 1850, Clarinda was listed as a head of household in Lee Co, VA.(17)

four girls under age 10.
In the 1830 Census, Samuel was listed as a head of household in Lee Co, VA.(20) He and his wife were in their 40s, with two young women 15-19, a boy and a girl 10-14, a girl 5-9, and a
boy and a girl under age 5.
In the 1840 Census, Samuel was listed as a head of household in Lee Co, VA.(21) He was in his 50s. In his household were a woman in her 30s, a young man 15-19, a girl 10-14, a boy 5-9,
