1. John1 Markham(1) (#259) was born in England perhaps around 1700. John died about 1771 in Chesterfield Co, VA.

He married Catharine Mathews probably around 1735. (Catharine Mathews is #5914.) Catharine died before 1770.

In 1720 John Markham came to New York. Sometime afterwards he settled in Chesterfield Co, VA.

He made a will 20 Oct 1770 in Chesterfield Co, VA.(2) His will names children Bernard, John, Vincent, George, Archibald, William, Catherine Smith, Rebecca, and Judith.

An inventory of John's estate was taken before Feb 1772 in Chesterfield Co, VA.(3)

John Markham and Catharine Mathews had the following children:

Second Generation

2. Bernard2 Markham (John1) (#5915) was born 1737.(12) Bernard died 13 July 1802 at 65 years of age.(13) He was buried three miles from Richmond, VA.

He married Mary Harris 11 May 1767 in Chesterfield Co, VA.(14) (Mary Harris is #6213.) Mary was the daughter of William Harris and Martha Osborne. Mary died 3 April 1825 at William Cooke's in Henry Co, KY.(15)

3. John2 Markham (John1) (#5916) birth date unknown. John died in Pittsylvania Co, VA.

In John Markham's will written 20 Oct 1770 in Chesterfield Co, VA, John was named as his son.(33) In the Revolution he was Captain of the 1st Virginia Regiment 16 Sept 1775; Major 2nd Virginia 13 Aug 1776; Lieutenant Colonel 8th Virginia 22 March 1777.(34)

In 1778 John purchased from John Donelson for 2800 pds tracts of 320, 281, & 400 acres in Pittsylvania Co, VA.(35)

He married Elizabeth Harris.(39) (Elizabeth Harris is #6242.) In the 1820 Census, Elizabeth Markham was listed as a head of household in Powhatan Co, VA.(40) She was age 45+. In her household were a young woman 26-44, three young men 18-25, two young women 16-25, a girl 10-14, and a girl under age 10. Fifteen persons were engaged in agriculture and seven in manufacturing. There were fifty four slaves of various ages.

He married twice. He married Sarah Hill after 11 April 1774 (bond date) in Chesterfield Co, VA. (Sarah Hill is #6230.) He married Mary Osborne 11 July 1789 in Chesterfield Co, VA.(44) (Mary Osborne is #6236.)

In John Markham's will written 20 Oct 1770 in Chesterfield Co, VA, George was named as his son.(45) George took out a bond to marry Sarah Hill 11 April 1774 in Chesterfield Co, VA.(46)

7. William2 Markham (John1) (#5920) was born before 1746. William died 1782 in Yorktown, VA, at 36 years of age.(59)

He married Mary Wathen before 1767. (Mary Wathen is #7958.) Mary was the daughter of Robert Wathen. Mary died of smallpox in 1782 in Chesterfield Co, VA.(60) She contracted the disease while entertaining a soldier returning from Yorktown.

He was appointed Rebecca Hudson Wathen's guardian Feb 1767 in Henrico Co, VA.(61) In 1768 William Markham and his wife Mary sold to John Wood 340 acres on Falling River in Bedford Co, VA.(62) In John Markham's will written 20 Oct 1770 in Chesterfield Co, VA, William was named as his son.(63) In 1771 William Markham and his wife Mary sold to Jonathan Rosser 100 acres on South Fork of Falling River in Bedford Co, VA.(64) In 1771 William Markham and his wife Mary sold to Joseph Tweedy 50 ac. S side of Button Creek of Falling River in Bedford Co, VA.(65) In 1772 William purchased from Robert Jennings 1/2 acre of 6305 acres on Falling River in Bedford Co, VA.(66) In 1773 and 1774 William Markham sold a slave and personal property by bill of sale in Bedford Co. VA.

In 1776 William Markham and his wife Mary sold to Thomas Robinson 200 acres on Galloway's Creek in Bedford Co, VA.(67) In 1776 William sold to Robert Williamson 270 acres on South Fork of Falling River in Bedford Co, VA.(68) In 1776 William Markham and his wife Mary sold to David Rosser 150 acres on South Fork of Falling River in Bedford Co, VA.(69) In 1776 William Markham and his wife Mary sold to Samuel Branch a mortgage on 150 acres on Long Br. adj. Hall in Bedford Co, VA.(70) In 1776 William Markham and his wife Mary sold to Absalom Milton 200 acres on Br. of Button Creek adj. David in Bedford Co, VA.(71)

12. John3 Markham (Bernard2, John1) (#6217) was born 20 Jan 1770.(77)

He married Lucy Champe Fleming 9 Jan 1794.(78) (Lucy Champe Fleming is #6227.) Lucy was born between 1776 and 1780. In the 1830 Census, Lucy was listed as a head of household in Goochland Co, VA.(79) She was in her 50s, with a woman in her 20s, a young woman 15-19, a girl 10-14, a boy 5-9, and thirteen slaves.

In the 1820 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Goochland Co, VA.(80) He was age 45+, his wife 26-44, with a young man 18-25, two young women 16-25, two boys and a girl 10-14, and two boys and two girls under age 10. Six persons were engaged in agriculture; there were seventeen slaves in the household.

John Markham and Lucy Champe Fleming had the following children:

18. George3 Markham (Bernard2, John1) (#6223) was born 6 Feb 1783.(94)

He married twice. He married Eliza Evans before 1806.(95) (Eliza Evans is #6246.) He married Fannie Taylor Garland 22 Jan 1818.(96) (Fannie Taylor Garland is #6253.) Fannie was born 4 Oct 1791 in Hanover Co, VA.(97) Fannie was the daughter of John Garland and Nancy (Garland). Fannie died of yellow fever 17 Sept 1853 in Mobile, AL, at 61 years of age.(98) She died of yellow fever.

In the 1820 Census, George was listed as a head of household in Powhatan Co, VA.(99) He and his wife were age 26-44, with a boy and two girls 10-14 and three boys and a girl under age 10. Ten persons were engaged in agriculture; there were sixteen slaves in the household.

27. Francis3 Markham (George2, John1)(123) (#6232) was born maybe about 1789.

In the 1830 Census, Francis was listed as a head of household in Powhatan Co, VA.(124) He was in his 30s, with a man in his 20s, a boy and a girl age 5-9, and six slaves. Mrs. Rivers' article says Francis married twice.

33. Vincent3 Markham (George2, John1)(127) (#6233) was born in Chesterfield Co, VA circa 1801.

He married Obedience Thomas Beasley in Chesterfield Co, VA.(128) (Obedience Thomas Beasley is #6277.) Obedience was born circa 1804 in Chesterfield Co, VA.

In the 1830 Census, Vincent was listed as a head of household in Chesterfield Co, VA.(129) He appears to have been enumerated twice. In one instance, he was a neighbor of his brother George, where Vincent was in his 20s, with a woman in her 40s, two women in their 20s, two boys 5-9, and three boys under age 5, with fifteen slaves. The other instance seems to be later, as he had added a girl under age 5 and four young male slaves.

In the 1840 Census, Vincent was listed as a head of household in Chesterfield Co, VA. 23 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Vincent was listed as a head of household in Powhatan Co, VA.(130)
