First Generation

1. John Nathan1 Markham of Botetourt Co. VA, son of Arthur Markham, (#5817) was born in Prince Edward Co, VA 1764.(1) See his father's family for more information.

John enlisted in March 1779 and fought at the Battle of Stono River in South Carolina.(2)

Before 6 June 1805 in Bedford Co, VA John gave consent for the marriage of his son James E. Markham.(3) In the 1810 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(4) He was called Jonathan Markham. He and his wife were age 45+, with a young man and a young woman 16-25, a boy 10-15, and two boys and two girls under age 10.

In the 1820 Census, John was listed as a head of household engaged in agriculture in Botetourt Co, VA.(5) He and his wife were age 45+, with a young woman 16-25, a boy 10-14, a girl under age 10, and a slave boy under 14.

John applied for a Revolutionary War military pension 25 March 1833 in Bedford Co, VA.(6)

John Nathan Markham of Botetourt Co. VA had the following children:

2. James E.2 Markham (John Nathan1) (#8027) was born in Virginia about 1785.

He married twice. He married Peggy Swain 6 June 1805 in Bedford Co, VA.(9) (Peggy Swain is #8735.) Peggy died probably between 1820 and 1822 at age unknown. He married Elizabeth Vest 25 March 1823 in Bedford Co, VA.(10) (Elizabeth Vest is #8787.) Elizabeth was born circa 1801 in Virginia. 26 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Elizabeth was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(11)

Before 6 June 1805 in Bedford Co, VA James was given consent to marry by his father John Nathan Markham of Botetourt Co. VA.(12) In the 1810 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(13) He and his wife were 16-25, with a boy and two girls under age 10.

In the 1820 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(14) He and his wife were age 26-44, with two girls age 10-14 and three boys and three girls under age 10. Six persons were engaged in manufacturing; there were no slaves.

In the 1830 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(15) He was in his 40s. In his household were a young woman in her 20s, a boy and a girl 15-19, a boy and a girl 10-14, a boy and a girl 5-9, and a girl under age 5.

In the 1840 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(16) He was in his 40s, with a wife in her 30s. With them were a young woman 15-19, a boy 10-14, a boy and a girl 5-9, and three boys under age 5. Two persons were engaged in agriculture.

James E. Markham and Peggy Swain had the following children:

4. Nathaniel2 Markham (John Nathan1) (#8028) was born about 1788.

He married Agnes Ann (Markham).(28) (Agnes Ann (Markham) is #8778.) Agnes was born around 1788.

1810 US Census probably enumerates Nathaniel at 22 years of age as a resident in the household of John Nathan Markham of Botetourt Co. VA in Botetourt Co, VA.(29) In the 1820 Census, Nathaniel was listed as a head of household engaged in agriculture in Botetourt Co, VA.(30) He was age 26-44. In his household were two women 26-44, a boy and a girl 10-14, and two boys and two girls under age 10.

In the 1830 Census, Nathaniel was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(31) He and his wife were in their 40s, with two young men and a young woman 15-19, a girl 10-14, a boy and two girls 5-9, and two boys and two girls under age 5.

In the 1840 Census, Nathaniel was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(32) He and his wife were in their 50s, with a young man and woman in their 20s, another young man and two young women 15-19, and a boy and a girl 10-14. Four persons were engaged in agriculture.

13 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Nathaniel was listed as a farmer and head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(33) 8 Sept 1860 in the Census of 1860, Nathaniel was listed as a farmer and head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(34) Nathaniel Markham wrote his will.(35) He left everything to his granddaughter Emily Read.

Nathaniel Markham and Agnes Ann (Markham) had the following children:

5. John W.2 Markham (John Nathan1) (#8020) was born in Virginia about 1795.(41)

He married Lucy (Markham). (Lucy (Markham) is #9187.) Lucy was born circa 1792 in Virginia.

In the 1820 Census, John was listed as a head of household engaged in commerce in Bedford Co, VA.(42) He was 16-25, his wife 16-25, with a boy and a girl under age 10 and a slave girl under age 14.

In the 1830 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(43) He and his wife were in their 30s, with a boy 15-19, a boy 10-14, a boy and two girls 5-9, and two boys and a girl under age 5. There were ten slaves - a woman 24-35, three males and a female 10-23, and three boys and two girls under age 10.

In the 1840 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(44) He was in his 40s, his wife was in her 30s, with three boys and three girls 10-14 and a boy 5-9. There were six slaves - a woman 36-54, a man 24-35, and four boys under age 10.

In 1850 in the Census of 1850, John was listed as a head of household in Davidson Co, TN.(45)

John W. Markham and Lucy (Markham) had the following children:

27 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Jesse was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(52) 7 Sept 1860 in the Census of 1860, Jesse was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $1800 in Botetourt Co, VA.(53)

Jesse E. Markham and Mary Kennady had the following children:

7. Nicholas H.2 Markham (John Nathan1)(54) (#9152) was born in Virginia 29 Aug 1809.(55)

Conflicting evidence states that Nicholas was born circa 1816 in Virginia.(57) In the 1840 Census, Nicholas was listed as a head of household engaged in agriculture in Botetourt Co, VA.(58) He was in his 20s, with a young woman 15-19 and a boy under age 5. The total number of persons noted by the enumerator was four.

18 Oct 1850 in the Census of 1850, Nicholas was listed as an overseer and head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(59) 24 July 1860 in the Census of 1860, Nicholas was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $3800 in Bedford Co, VA.(60)

John P. E. Markham and Keziah Louisa Pollard had the following children:

In the 1840 Census, Tillman was listed as a head of household engaged in agriculture in Botetourt Co, VA.(69) He was in his 30s. In his household was a young woman 15-19, a boy 5-9, and a boy under age 5. There was also an old man in his 80s, but no Revolutionary War pensioner's name was associated with the household.

1. The present author is the only one who has ventured to combine his two known names of John and Jonathan as John Nathan. The author has based this idea on the probability that his middle name matches his son's name, Nathaniel, and that the census taker who recorded him as "Jonathan" made a natural mistake when his informant spoke "John Nathan" quickly with the local accent.
