First Generation

1. Thomas1 Markham of Bedford Co. VA, son of Arthur Markham, (#5815) was born in Prince Edward Co, VA 15 July 1757.(1) See his father's family for more information. Thomas died 4 May 1840 in Bedford Co, VA, at 82 years of age.(2)

He married Nelly Wilkerson after 3 Dec 1785 (bond date) in Bedford Co, VA. (Nelly Wilkerson is #6680.) Nelly was born about 1764. Nelly(3) was the daughter of Joseph Wilkerson and Mary Franklin. Nelly died Sept 1849 in Botetourt Co, VA, at 85 years of age.(4) In 1840 the US Census probably enumerates Nelly at 76 years of age as a resident in the household of Marshall Markham in Botetourt Co, VA. 18 June 1844 in Bedford Co, VA Nelly applied for a widow's pension based on the Revolutionary War military service of her husband Thomas Markham of Bedford Co. VA.(5) At the time of tha application she was a resident of Botetourt County.

He volunteered in the Minute Men of Prince Edward County.(6)

Thomas took out a bond to marry Nelly Wilkerson 3 Dec 1785 in Bedford Co, VA.(7) In the 1810 Census, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(8) He and his wife were age 45+, with a young man and three young women 16-25, a boy and two girls age 10-15, and three slaves.

In the 1820 Census, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(9) He and his wife were age 45+. In the household were two women 26-44, a young man 18-25, a boy and two girls under age 10, and a free colored girl under age 14.

In the 1830 Census, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(10) He and his wife were in their 70s, with a boy 15-19, a boy and two girls 10-14, and a girl under age 5. In the previous census, there were no children under age 10, but now there are five youngsters, believed to be grandchildren, orphans of son Josiah. Also in the household were eleven slaves - a woman 55-99, a man and a woman 24-35, two young men or boys and four young women or girls 10-23, and two boys under age 10.

Thomas applied for a Revolutionary War military pension 22 July 1833 in Bedford Co, VA.(11)

Much of the information about the descendants of Thomas and Nelly was taken from a December, 1997 article sent to the Markham mailing list by Brenda Marble.(12)

2. Josiah2 Markham (Thomas1) (#8634) was born about 1787.

He married Judith (Markham). (Judith (Markham) is #8635.) Judith was born maybe around 1787.

Josiah Markham and Judith (Markham) had the following children:

4. Martha W. (Polly)2 Markham (Thomas1)(13) (#8699) was born in Virginia about 1790. Martha died 3 May 1872 in Bedford Co, VA, at 81 years of age.(14)

She married Unknown Markham. (Unknown Markham is #8700.) Unknown was born around 1790.

In the 1830 Census, Martha was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(15) She was in her 40s. In her household was a young woman in her 20s, a young man 15-19, three boys 10-14, a girl 5-9, and a girl under age 5.

In the 1840 Census, Martha was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(16) She was in her 60s, with a boy age 5-9. There was a male slave 36-54 and a slave woman 24-35. The enumerator entered 12 as the total number of persons in the household, of whom four were said to be engaged in agriculture.

11 Sept 1850 in the Census of 1850, Martha was listed as a head of household with real estate of $250 in Bedford Co, VA.(17) 23 July 1860 Martha was listed as a member of James M. (Matt) Markham's household in the Census of 1860 in Peaksville, Bedford Co, VA.(18) Martha's estate was probated.(19)

Martha W. (Polly) Markham and Unknown Markham had the following children:

5. Thomas2 Markham (Thomas1) (#8710) was born in Bedford Co, VA Feb 1791.(26) Thomas died 29 Oct 1870 in Putnam Co, WV, at 79 years of age.(27)

Conflicting evidence states that Thomas was born between 1795 and 1800.(30) In the 1820 Census, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(31) He was 18-25, his wife 26-44, with two boys under age 10. Nine persons were engaged in agriculture; the household included fifteen slaves under age 45.

In the 1830 Census, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(32) He and his wife were in their 30s, with two boys 10-14, two boys 5-9, and a boy and a girl under age 5.

In the 1840 Census, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(33) He and his wife were in their 40s, with a boy 15-19, a boy and a girl 10-14, a boy and a girl 5-9, and a girl under age 5. Three persons were engaged in agriculture.

27 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Thomas was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $300 in Botetourt Co, VA.(34) Thomas moved with his family about 1858 to Putnam Co, VA.(35) 29 June 1870 in the Census of 1870, Thomas was listed as a head of household with real estate of $2000 in Winfield, Putnam Co, WV.(36)

Thomas Markham and Martha Loyd had the following children:

6. Sarah (Sally)2 Markham (Thomas1) (#8729) was born born between 1792 and 1795.

She married Moses Parker 18 Sept 1813 in Bedford Co, VA.(47) (Moses Parker is #8730.)

7. Owen William2 Markham (Thomas1) (#8746) was born in Bedford Co, VA 6 June 1793.(55) Owen died 11 Oct 1875 in Botetourt Co, VA, at 82 years of age.(56)

He married Nancy Margaret Watson 30 March 1826 in Bedford Co, VA.(57) (Nancy Margaret Watson is #8747.) Nancy was born circa 1802 in Virginia.(58)

In the 1830 Census, Owen was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(59) He was in his 30s, his wife in her 20s, with two girls under age 5. There was a slave woman 24-35 with two boys and three girls under age 10.

In the 1840 Census, Owen was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(60) He was in his 40s, his wife in her 30s, with two girls 10-14, a boy and two girls 5-9, and a girl under 5. There was a slave woman 24-35, three female slaves 10-23, and three boys and a girl under age 10. Six persons were engaged in agriculture.

13 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Owen was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $1000 in Botetourt Co, VA.(61) 8 Sept 1860 in the Census of 1860, Owen was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $3000 in Botetourt Co, VA.(62)

Owen William Markham and Nancy Margaret Watson had the following children:

8. Mary A.2 Markham (Thomas1) (#8761) was born in Bedford Co, VA about 1795.(71) Mary died about 1865 in Bedford Co, VA.(72)

She married Ezekiel A. Tolley.(73) (Ezekiel A. Tolley is #8762.) Ezekiel was born around 1795.

Several of the Tolley children settled in Rockbridge Co, VA.(74)

10. Marshall3 Markham (Josiah2, Thomas1) (#8636) was born in Bedford Co, VA about 1811.(83)

He married three times. He married Martha J. Watson 19 April 1832 in Bedford Co, VA.(84) (Martha J. Watson is #8637.) Martha was born maybe around 1811. He married Frances A. Tucker 21 Oct 1851 in Botetourt Co, VA.(85) (Frances A. Tucker is #8655.) He married Frances P. Goff 12 Oct 1863.(86) (Frances P. Goff is #8656.)

In the 1840 Census, Marshall was listed as a head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(87) He was in his 20s. In his household were two women in their 20s, an older woman in her 70s believed to be his grandmother Nelly, a girl 10-14, two boys 5-9, and two boys under age 5. There was a slave woman 36-54, another 24-35, a male 10-23, and a boy and a girl under age 10. Three persons were engaged in agriculture.

26 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Marshall was listed as a farmer and head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(88) 7 Sept 1860 in the Census of 1860, Marshall was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $350 in Botetourt Co, VA.(89)

She married Tillman Markham 2 Nov 1833 in Bedford Co, VA.(98) (Tillman Markham is #8664.) Tillman was born between 1806 and 1810 in Virginia. See his father's family for more information. Tillman(99) was the son of Nathaniel Markham and Agnes Ann (Markham).

In the 1840 Census, Tillman was listed as a head of household engaged in agriculture in Botetourt Co, VA.(100) He was in his 30s. In his household was a young woman 15-19, a boy 5-9, and a boy under age 5. There was also an old man in his 80s, but no Revolutionary War pensioner's name was associated with the household.

27 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, Tillman was listed as a farmer and head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(101) 8 Sept 1860 in the Census of 1860, Tillman was listed as a farmer and head of household with personal estate of $300 in Botetourt Co, VA.(102)

He married Docia Lockett 1 Jan 1838 in Bedford Co, VA.(104) (Docia Lockett is #8675.)

In the 1840 Census, Joseph was listed as a head of household engaged in manufacture or trade in Bedford Co, VA.(105) He was in his 20s, his wife was 15-19, with a boy under age 5. The enumerator wrote that the total number of persons in the household was four.

11 Sept 1850 in the Census of 1850, Joseph was listed as a farmer and head of household in Bedford Co, VA.(106)

(Polly) Markham's household in the Census of 1850 in Bedford Co, VA.(113) 23 July 1860 in the Census of 1860, James was listed as a head of household with personal estate of $300 in Peaksville, Bedford Co, VA.(114) James claimed an interest in the estate of Martha W. (Polly) Markham.(115)

James M. (Matt) Markham and Edith Cottrell had the following children:

22. William C.3 Markham (Thomas2, Thomas1) (#8714) was born in Bedford Co, VA 31 March 1821.(116) William died 4 Feb 1871 in Carroll Co, MO, at 49 years of age.(117) William was buried at Creasy Cemetery in Carroll Co, MO.(118) This cemetery may have been washed away by a flood.

He married Elizabeth Pribble 18 Sept 1841 in Bedford Co, VA.(119) (Elizabeth Pribble is #8715.) Elizabeth died of pneumonia March 1870 in Carroll Co, MO.(120)

27 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, William was listed as a farmer and head of household in Botetourt Co, VA.(121) William moved with his family before 1860 to Carroll Co, MO.(122) 10 Sept 1860 in the Census of 1860, William was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $1700 in Carroll Co, MO.(123)

William C. Markham and Elizabeth Pribble had the following children:
