First Generation

1. Collector¹ Marcum of Green Co. KY (#456) birth date unknown.

This is a collector for Marcums who appear in the records of Green County, Kentucky.

Probably somehow connected to this group is Thomas Marcum of Stokes Co. NC and Clay Co. KY, who appeared on the 1809 tax list and in the 1810 census of Green County, KY.

Collector Marcum of Green Co. KY had the following children:

2 i. John² Marcum of Green Co. KY (#666) was born before 1765. In the 1810 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Green Co, KY.⁽¹⁾ He and his wife were age 45+, with a boy and a girl 10-15 and two boys and a girl under age 5.
2 Oct 1815 John was taxed for himself and one $15 horse in Capt. Brownlee's Company in Green Co, KY.⁽²⁾
He could be the same person as John Marcum who was in the 1810 census of Stokes County, NC. That John's brother, Thomas Marcum of Clay Co. KY, was in Green County, KY in 1810.
He's evidently not John Barnett Marcum, as both John and Barnett appear separately on the 1815 tax list of Green County.

3 ii. Abner Marcum of Green Co. KY (#8247) was born between 1766 and 1784. In the 1810 Census, Abner was listed as a head of household in Green Co, KY.⁽³⁾ He was age 26-44, with a wife 16-25 and two boys and a girl under age 10. He was a neighbor of John Marcum (45+) and Thomas Markum (26-44). It cannot be freely presumed that he was a son of John, as there were two women age 45+ in the household of Thomas, and one could possibly have been Abner's mother.
11 July 1811 Abner was taxed for himself and one horse in Green Co, KY.⁽⁴⁾
It would seem that this might be the same man as Abner Markham, the 1787 taxpayer of Franklin Co. VA and 1790 resident of Burke Co. NC. In 1790 Abner Marcum of Burke Co. NC appeared to have as many as eight children, including five boys under age 16. Either there is no trace of them in Lee County, or the other two taxpayers would be his sons.
He would be of an age to be the same as Abner Markham who was listed as age 26-44 in the census of Bedford Co. TN in 1820.
One of thos two is probably the same as Abner Markham who was a taxpayer age 16 and over in Lee Co. VA in 1795.
He could be the father of Abner Markham, the War of 1812 veteran, who was said to have been born in Virginia in 1795.

+ 4 iii. Barnett Marcum was born probably before 1771.

Second Generation

4. Barnett² Marcum (Collector¹) (#337) was born probably before 1771.

He married Lucy Belcher after 6 June 1791 (bond date) in Franklin Co, VA. (Lucy Belcher is #8075.) Lucy was born probably before 1774. Lucy was the daughter of Isham Belcher.

Barnett took out a bond to marry Lucy Belcher 6 June 1791 in Franklin Co, VA.⁽⁵⁾ 27 April 1809 Barnett was taxed for himself and one horse in Green Co, KY.⁽⁶⁾ Taxed on the same date was Thomas Marcum.

8 July 1810 Barnett was taxed for himself and one horse in Green Co, KY.⁽⁷⁾ 17 July 1811 Barnett was taxed for himself and two horses in Green Co, KY.⁽⁸⁾ 2 Oct 1815 Barnett was taxed for himself and $76 property in Capt. Brownlee's Company in Green Co, KY.⁽⁹⁾

Barnett Marcum had the following children:

5. John³ Marcum (Barnett², Collector¹) (#5962) was born in Virginia circa 1797.

He married Margaret (Marcum). (Margaret (Marcum) is #5963.) Margaret was born circa 1798 in Green Co, KY. Margaret died before 1869 at age unknown.

In the 1820 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Green Co, KY.⁽¹⁰⁾ He was age 18-25, his wife 16-25. In their household were a girl 10-15 and two boys and two girls under age 10.

In the Census of 1850, John was listed as a head of household in Green Co, KY.⁽¹¹⁾ John Marcum wrote His will 3 Aug 1869 in Green Co, KY.⁽¹²⁾ He made a will 3 Aug 1869 in Green Co, KY.⁽¹³⁾

John Marcum and Margaret (Marcum) had the following children:

7 i. Ruth V.⁴ Marcum (#7947). She married Mr. Webb. (Mr. Webb is #7948.)
