Marcum

First Generation

1. Josiah1 Marcum (#258) was born in Chesterfield Co, VA 2 May 1759.(1)

He married twice. He married Eda McDonald. (Eda McDonald is #5885.) Some say that Eda McDonald was the mother of only the first four children of Josiah. The author infers from Marcum correspondents that the name McDonald is a family tradition, undocumented.

He married Polly Belcher.(2) (Polly Belcher is #6888.)

In 1763 or 1764 Josiah moved with his family to Prince Edward Co, VA.(3) While still young, he later moved again to Bedford County.

In Bedford Co, VA 4 Jan 1776 Josiah Markham was bound to Thomas Markham for apprenticeship.(4)

He was a resident of Bedford Co, VA when he enlisted for service in the Revolution with the Virginia Line.(5)

In 1782 and 1783 Josiah's name was on a tax roll in Washington Co, VA.(6) Josiah bought from John Marcum of Henry Co. VA 170 acres in Henry Co, VA.(7) 1785 Josiah's name was on a tax roll in Henry Co, VA.(8) 20 Nov 1785 Josiah of Henry County sold 125 acres of land in Franklin County. The land originally was in Henry County.(9)

Montgomery Co, VA Court Order Book 1, page 252, recordes a suit, Markham vs. Farler, 29 March 1786.(10) In 1787 Josiah Markum defended a suit brought by Henry McDonald.(11) Josiah was recorded on the tax rolls of Montgomery Co, VA in March 1788 and May 1789.(12)

That date of 1789 is not inconsistent with the presumption that he resided in that portion of Montgomery County which was spun off to form Kanawha County in 1788, as land records for Kanawha County exist only from 1790. It may well be that Josiah was a resident of Kanawha County until 1809, when a portion of Kanawha County was spun off to create Cabell County.

Hardesty's History of Wayne County describes the Lincoln District as "the most southern in the county ... bounded on the ... south by Logan county, and west by the State of Kentucky, from which it is separated by the Tug river."(13) Hardesty says the first cabin was built in 1799, and was joined by a number of others in 1800. "In the next ten years many other cabin homes appeared along the valleys and upon the hills of this region. Among those who assisted in establishing them were ... Jacob Marcum, William Crum, John Marcum, Josiah Marcum, Moses Marcum ..."(14)

From 1809 to 1818 Josiah's name was on a tax roll in Cabell Co, VA.(15) Hardesty's History of Wayne County says, "The first blacksmith shop ever erected within what is now Lincoln district was that of Josiah Marcum, who was the first son of Vulcan, so far as known, who wielded the sledge on the bank of Tug river. He erected his shop and began business in 1811. It was located at the base of Bull mountain, near the river, and a short distance below where William Crum now resides."(16) The W V Heritage Encyclopedia says, "He was an expert gunsmith and blacksmith and acquired the nickname 'The Vulcan of the Big Sandy Valley'."(17)

In 1818, Josiah, with son Moses, received a grant of 75 acres of land in Cabell Co, VA.(18)

From 1820 to 1822 Josiah's name was on a tax roll in Cabell Co, VA.(19) 1820 US Census probably enumerates Josiah at 61 years of age as a resident of the household of John C. Marcum in Cabell Co, VA.(20) In 1822 Josiah received a grant from the state of 40 acres in Cabell Co, VA.(21) In 1823, and from 1825 to 1828 Josiah's name was on a tax roll in Cabell Co, VA.(22) In the 1830 Census, Josiah was listed as a head of household in Cabell Co, VA.(23) He was in his 60s, his wife in her 50s, with another woman in her 30s and a boy and a girl 15-19.

He applied for a pension for his Revolutionary War service 2 Nov 1832 in Lawrence Co, KY.(24)

Josiah moved to Ohio in 1845.(25)

In the 1820 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Cabell Co, VA.(82) In the household were a man age 45+, a young man 18-25, a young woman 16-25, and a boy under age 10. Because of the single child, and the fact that John was married in 1819, the author believes that the younger man was John, head of household, and the older man must have been his father, Josiah.

In the 1830 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Cabell Co, VA.(83) He was in his 30s, his wife in her 20s, with a boy 10-14, a boy and a girl 5-9, and a boy and two girls under age 5.

Susannah died in 1897 at 75 years of age. Susannah was buried at the Press/Fryly Cemetery in Wayne Co, WV.(107) In the 1860 census of Logan Co, VA Susannah was in the household of Moses Marcum, age 33, with real estate of $130 and personal estate of $80. There were six children - the oldest age 8. It seems likely that she was Moses's wife, but the estate may indicate she was previously widowed.(108)

Fourth Generation

112. Watson L. (Watt)4 Marcum (Grandson of Josiah3, Son of Josiah2, Josiah1) (#8249) was born in West Virginia May 1865. He might be named for Watson Marcum, who died as a prisoner of war in March, 1864. That's too early to have been his father, but perhaps he was named for his late uncle. His parents are a mystery, but from the 1870 and 1880 census records, it appears that clues might be revealed in the marriage records of Logan County.

He married Mary (Marcum) circa 1887. (Mary (Marcum) is #8250.) Mary was born Sept 1871 in West Virginia.

16 Aug 1870 Watson was listed as a member of Thomas Clark's household in the Census of 1870 in Logan Co, WV.(178) Yes, the surname in the census listing shows the name Watson White, but after all, he's a boarder with a 79 year old man who might have been a bit careless with the enumerator. The connection is drawn from the adjacent dwelling of Samuel Runyon and because of the baby, Calumba White, in the 1880 household, and the fact that Julian White is not found then in Logan County. Just how Watson Marcum might have come to be in this household is anyone's guess, but no other Marcum of about age 5, with first initial W, not accounted for in the 1880 census, is to be found in Logan County in 1870.

16 Aug 1870 Watson was listed as a neighbor of Samuel Runyon in the Census of 1870 in Logan Co, WV.(179) Watson was listed as Samuel Runyon's nephew in the 1880 Census in Logan Co, WV.(180) Watson's mother might be a sister of Samuel Runyon. Or, Samuel's second wife, Lethey, might be a Marcum, sister of Watson's father. Or, perhaps more likely in that vein, Samuel's first wife Martha (see the 1870 census) might be the Marcum sister. But, no candidate of the appropriate age for either woman is known from the census records, so the Runyon mother seems the most likely possibility.

27 June 1900 Watson was listed in the 1900 Census as a head of household renting a farm in Mingo Co, WV.(181)

Watson L. (Watt) Marcum and Mary (Marcum) had the following children:

113. Thomas D.4 Marcum (Stephen M.3, Stephen2, Josiah1) (#6859) was born in Lawrence Co, KY 17 Dec 1840.(182) Thomas died after an illness of one week 23 Nov 1921 at his home on Broadway in Catlettsburg, at 80 years of age.(183)

He married Mary Bromley 19 Jan 1865.(184) (Mary Bromley is #9340.) Mary was born about 1840 (if same age as spouse). Mary died in 1910 at 70 years of age.(185)

He served in the Union Army during the Civil War as Captain of Company K, 14th Kentucky Infantry.(186)

Thomas was elected registrar of lands, in 1875 in Kentucky. Between 1885 and 1888 during the first Cleveland administration Thomas was appointed to the position of inspector of Indian lands.(187)

According to his obituary, "For thirty-one years prior to his death he had been general agent for the New York Life Insurance Company. He was active in business until the day before his last illness compelled him to keep his bed.

"Captain Marcum was a thirty-second degree Mason, an Elk, and a member of the Baptist church."(188)

Thomas D. Marcum and Mary Bromley had the following children:
