Research in Old England

I've extracted information about the Markham family in England from various sources and public records to augment various printed genealogical articles that have tied those people into families. The results of my research are being put up here on these web pages as time permits.

The Markham family is thought to have originated in the adjacent Nottinghamshire villages of West Markham and East Markham. Claron, a Saxon chief, was said in the Domesday Book of 1088 to hold land at Westmarcham. Claron and his descendants are believed to have adopted the surname "de Marcham". I've prepared an outline of ten generations of the Markhams of Markham, in descent from Claron to the family of Sir John Markham, Chief Justice of England, from the material in Rev. David Frederick Markham's 1854 book, A History of the Markham Family. Thereafter, the descent continues through Sir John's sons, Sir John Markham of Sedgebrook and Sir Robert Markham of Markham whose descendants settled at Cotham.

There are also reports on Markhams of Great Creaton, Northamptonshire, and on otherwise unconnected Markhams of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Durham, Essex, Leicestershire, Early Lincolnshire, Later Lincolnshire After 1700, London, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Suffolk, Warwickshire, and Yorkshire.

I've extracted all of the Virginia bound emigrants from the four volumes of Peter Coldham's series Complete Book of Emigrants, as well as from Coldham's Emigrants in Bondage, and prepared a report on Emigrant Marcum/Markhams from England.

On the opposite shore, I've collected all of the Marcums and Markhams from Nell Marion Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers. The strays appear in a report on Early Marcum/Markhams of Virginia.

I've prepared a combined every name index of all of the reports by copying the indexes from the end of each report into a single page. There's also a list of surnames that link into the index file. Once you find a name in the index, the link will pop you right to him in his page.
