Bridenbaugh noted "Lady Markham, wife of Sir Griffin, appeared at [Paul's Cross] in 1618 to do penance for marrying one of her servants while her husband was still alive. She had to stand again at other places and pay a fine of £1,000."⁽⁵¹⁾
