"He moved back to Sudbury before 1671, however, and was killed accidentally in the summer of 1675 (aged 34) by a pistol shot from his brother Peter." In addition to the four children listed, two unnamed daughters were mentioned in the 1686 settlement of their grandfather John Bourne's estate.

Robert's estate was probated in Consistory Court, Winton, Hampshire, England.(91) He was christened September 29, 1566 in Weyhill, Hampshire, England.(92)

The parish of Weyhill had renown beyond its size. Daniel Defoe, in his book, A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain, wrote, "at the place where the open down country begins, is Wey-Hill, where the greatest fair for sheep is kept, that this nation can shew." The Yale Universit Press edition of that work includes a reproduction of "A true groundplot of Wey Hill Faire, 1683," a charming picture map of the neighborhood near the parish church, with symbols representative of sheep, horses, `beefs,' leather hides, and an array of `joyning and turning wares.' It was probably much the same some fifty years before, in the time of Robert Bent.

He had acquired a sizeable estate during the sixty five years of his life. Harold N. Bent, in The Bents of Wisconsin, quoted his will. Although the present author's copy of the page bearing the will is missing the leftmost four characters of each line, it was thought best to attempt to reproduce it imperfectly. Mr. Felton's abstract (NEHGR V.49) left out all mention of the ewes, and suppressed the testator's apparent distrust of foreign money. Doubtful words are enclosed in <>.

"In the name of God Amen I Robert Bent of Penton Grafton in the parish of Wayhill being sick in body but of perfect memry doe make my last will and Testament and thereby I doe commend my vnto God, and doe bequeath vnto the Church a noble, and vnto the poore tenne groats "and I bequeath vnto my Sonne Robert Bent fortie shillings, and to my Sonne John Bent fortie shillings to his sonne Robert I giue a young cowe, and to William Bent the sonne of the said John Bent two yewes and to Peter Bent the sonne of the said John Bent two yewes and to Anis Bent the daughter of the said John, I giue two yewes. "And vnto my Daughter Annis Barnes I giue pounds of good and lawfull money of England and to her sonne young Richard Barnes I give pounds of good & lawfull money of England. "And I giue vnto my Daughter Jane the wife of Robert Plimpton tenne pounds of good & lawfull money of England; and to Robert Plimpton their sonne I giue two yewes; and to Thomas Plimpton their Sonne I giue two yewes, and to William Plimpton their sonne two yewes And to Jane Plimpton their Daughter I giue two yewes And to Elizabeth Plimpton the Daughter of the said Robert Plimpton I giue fiue pounds of good & lawful money of England. "And to my Aunte Drew I give one bushell of wheate "And to my sister Annis I giue one bushell of wheate "And vnto Joanne Noyse my sister the wife of William Noyse I one bushell of wheate "And the rest of my goods I bequesthe vnto my wife whome I make my Execuetor of this my last will & Testament." Harold Bent notes at the end of the will, "Beginning at 'my will is' the remainder is in different hand writing." That would be at this point: "my will is that the legaceases giuen vnto my sonne William Baker and his wife to be paid vnto them twelfe months after my deses. and the tenn pound vnto my daughter Joanne to be paid vnto hir the 23 day of march nixt; and ye fife pound I giuen vnto my Cussen Elezabeth Plemton to be paid vnto hir hir day of maridge. "And I desier newbores Peter Noyes and Henry Tuncks to be overseers of this my will: and I giue them for paines xij d. a peece. "I giue unto Annes Bent ye daughter of Richard; 2 ewes and I do giue unto Bent ye daughter of Richard Bent 2 ewes. "I witnesse whereof wee have set to our hand, Tarrant minister of weyhill, Peter Noyes, Henry Tunks his mark K. "<> Probate Acct. Consistory Court of Winton. "Inventory dated Aug. 30, 1631. Some is 107 li. j s. ij d."

Robert Bent and Agnes Gosling had the following children:

51. Agnes5 Gosling(104) (#5721) was born in probably, Hampshire, England. Agnes died 1639 in ship 'Jonathan', Boston Harbor, Massachusetts.

She married Robert Bent October 13, 1589 in Weyhill, Hampshire, England.(105) (Robert Bent is #5720.) Robert was born before September 29, 1566 (chr. date) in Weyhill, Hampshire, England. Robert(106) was the son of John Bent and Edith (Bent). Robert died July 1631 in Penton Grafton, Weyhill, Hampshire, England, at 64 years of age. Robert was buried July 29, 1631 in Weyhill, Hampshire, England.(107) Robert's estate was probated in Consistory Court, Winton, Hampshire, England.(108) He was christened September 29, 1566 in Weyhill, Hampshire, England.(109) (See Robert Bent for the children resulting from this marriage.)

Agnes's estate was probated November 7, 1648 in Suffolk Co, MA.(110)

Her parents have not been identified. A clue may be discovered in the Lay Subsidy Roll of 1586, which recorded that William Gosling of Vernehams Deane, a parish about six miles north of Weyhill, was taxed three shillings on three pounds worth of goods, to raise money for the King's government. A 1640 will of a William Gosling of Fernham Deane (the 1586 taxee would have been at least age 75) is listed in the index of wills at the Diocese of Winchester; it has not yet been examined by the author.

Another prospect is a 1614 will of Thomas Gosling of Sainte Mary Borne, which lies about seven miles northeast of Weyhill.

In 1639, at an advanced age, she determined to accompany her daughter Agnes Barnes Blanchard and her family in the ship "Jonathan" to America to join her son John. Testimony in records of the court of Middlesex County, Massachusetts, recounts the difficulty of the journey. Nellie Palmer George, in her book, Ancestors, quoted the statement of Nicholas Noyes, "Old Goody Bent came up from Andover in a waggon with the carriers and Thomas Blanchard took care of her and her goods from andour to the shippe and shee was with them about a month at London and there was a gathering among christians there, the old woman wh't w'th hir age and wh't w'th hir sicknesse for shee was sicke all ye way from London to Nantasketh and Thomas Blanchard endured very much w'th hir until ye shippe came to Nantasketh and anchored there and this deponant come away befo'r shee was dead." Ms. George continues with testimony of Anthony Sumerby: "About the time the shippe come to anchor in Boston harbor the woman Agnes Bent died and they procured to carry hir ashore to be buried." Long after her death, a dispute arose concerning her dying will, given verbally aboard the "Johnathan." The Suffolk County probate record (1:46) contains the following entry: "Bent: 7 (9) 1648: Agnes Bent Will: Thomas Blancher testifyeth that Agnes Bent made her will & gave her estate to Richard Barnes & Elisabeth Plimton & to pay fyve pound to Elisabeth Plimton & twenty pounds to Richard Barnes & gave ten pounds to John Bent & fyve pound to Thomas Plimton the rest to be divided betweene Richard Barnes & Elisabeth Plimton. Deposed the first of the 9th month 1648 before me Increase Nowell. "Peter Noyce testifyeth the same, all but the two debts the same day. Deposed before me Increase Nowell."

The earliest proven ancestor of the American Bent family is John Bent, of the village of Penton Grafton in the County of Southampton. The local church, St. Michael's, was in the nearby villiage of Weyhill, which was the name given to the parish. All of his children were christened at St. Michael's, and John was buried there. Harold N. Bent's book, The Bents in Wisconsin, quotes John Bent's will of 1588 (paragraphing added by the present author): "In the name of god Amen the xix'th day of June 1588 in the thirtieth yeare of the Raigne of o'r Soveraigne Ladie Elizabeth &c I John Bent of Penton Grafton in the p'ishe of Waiehill beinge sicke in bodie but of p'fect remembrance thanks be geue' to Almightie god doe make and ordaine this my last will and Testament im manner and forme followinge: "Imprimis I geue and yeeld my soule into the hands of Almightie god my onelie maker and redeemer &c Itm I geue and bequeath vnto the pishe church of Waiehill aforesaid xij d. Felton notes, "The inventory of her estate, dated 19 June 1601, described her as of Penton Grafton." In his 1895 article (NEHGR v.49), Mr. Felton abstracted her will: "Edith Bent of Calne in the county of Wilts widow, 15. June 1601. Proved 30. Sept. 1601. "To the parish church at Calne four pence. To the poor man's box there four pence. My son Richard Bent. My cousin Richard Bent son of Robert Bent. My son in law John Williams wheat at Wayhill. My daughter Ann Street.
