Helton, O'Neal, Winstead
1. John1 Helton,(1) son of Marvel Helton and Agnes (Helton), (#2836) was born in Tennessee circa 1804.(2) John died of heart disease June 1880 in Bartholomew Co, IN,
at age 75.(3) His remains were interred at the Christian Church
Cemetery in Burnsville, Bartholomew Co, IN.(4)
He married Susan A. (Helton) May 30, 1830 in Virginia.(5) (Susan A. (Helton) is #2837.) Susan was born circa 1812 in probably, Tennessee. Susan
died 1886 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 74. Her remains were interred in Christian Church, Burnsville, Bartholomew Co,
IN.(6) Susan applied for a survivor's pension based on the
Civil War military service of Noah Helton in 1870 in Bartholomew Co, IN.(7) In her affidavit, she avowed that she had "no property of any kind except a few household goods and one
cow, worth all together not more than one hundred dollars."
She listed her children in 1870 as follows: "Andy (married) aged
35, lives in Missouri; Aggie (married) 32, lives in Bartholomew Coouty, Indiana; Lucinda ONeal (married) 30; Jennie 23 (married) lives in
Bartholomew County, Indiana; John, aged 22 (married) Bartholomew County." She stated that those children living near her helped to support
her as much as they could, but they were poor and had families of their own to support.
Her claim was granted in November,
1872. She was to receive eight dollars per month, with back payment from September, 1865.
In the 1840 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Hawkins Co, TN.(8) He was in his 30s, with a wife in her 20s, a boy 5-9, and two girls under age 5. He was a neighbor of
Marvel Helton.
In the Census of 1850, John was listed as a farmer and head of household in Hawkins Co, TN.(9) He resided near Agnes, Pleasant, and the Spitsers.
John hasn't been found in the census of 1860 or 1870. His wife's application for pension mentioned that John had from time to time rented
farms in Hendricks County. He probably came to Bartholomew County around 1865, as the mortality census in 1880 said he had been a county
resident for fifteen years. Susan said in 1870 that John had been unable to work much for six or seven years due to age and infirmity.
Another affidavit there said John suffered paralysis of his face.
In the 1880 Census, John was listed as a head of household 21 June 1880 posthumously in Bartholomew Co, IN.(10)
He is probably Sarah (Helton) O'Neal's
brother or cousin. Born in Tennessee at about the same time as Sarah, he resided near his parents in Hawkins County until some time beyond
1850. After moving to Hendricks County, Indiana, in the middle 1850s, the younger Heltons were closely associated with the O'Neals, with two
marriages between the families, and several occasions of bond or affadavit by O'Neals at the marriage of Heltons. The Heltons moved to
Bartholomew County, Indiana, in the fall of 1866, according to an affidavit in Sarah's application for pension.
He was said to
have died of heart disease in 1880, after residing in the county for fifteen years.
John Helton and Susan A. (Helton) had the following children:

Sally2 Helton (#3889) was born in Hawkins Co, TN circa 1831.(11)

IN.(13) (Sarah B. Roach is #1226.) Sarah was born circa
1841 in Indiana. Sarah was the daughter of Ashcraft Roach and Mary (Roach).
During the Civil War Andrew served in the Union Army in Company I of the 9th Indiana Cavalry and in Company A of the 13th Indiana Infantry.
He resided in Missouri 16 Jan 1871.(14) Andrew
applied for a Civil War military pension 26 Oct 1883 in Missouri.(15) On March 17, 1908, an Andrew Helton of Stanberry, Gentry County, Missouri, signed in a shaky hand an
affidavit in connection with the pension application of Jane Helton, widow of Christopher O'Neal. However, in that affidavit Andrew was said
to have known Jane for thiry years; it's therefore likely the signature was that of the son of his uncle William Helton.

v.
Noah Helton (#3892) was born in Hawkins Co, TN circa 1844. Noah died September 27, 1865 in Hendricks Co,

Infantry Regiment. His military record describes him, at the age of twenty, as five feet seven and a half inches tall, with a dark
complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. During his service, he contracted a disease characterized by chronic diarrhoea. He was mustered out
at Nashville, Tennessee, on September 5, 1865, when his unit was disbanded, and returned home, where he died of his disease three weeks
later. In 1870, his mother applied for, and received, a pension based on his service.(16)
4. Agnes A.2 Helton (John1) (#2839) was born in Hawkins Co, TN circa 1837.(17) Agnes died in 1898 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 61. Her remains were interred at

$50 in Hendricks Co, IN.(21) He served in Company I, 9th
Indiana Cavalry, during the Civil War.(22)
Conflicting evidence states that Agnes was born in 1839.(23) In
1876 Agnes applied for a widow's pension based on the Civil War military service of her husband Daniel Winstead.(24) Agnes was listed as John Helton's widowed daughter in the
1880 Census in Bartholomew Co, IN.(25)

She married Christopher O'Neal February 15, 1866 in Bartholomew Co, IN.(41) (Christopher O'Neal is #1460.) Christopher was born November 1846 in
