1. John¹ Harwood⁽¹⁾ (#1800) was born in Maryland. John died 1805 in Rowan Co, NC.

He married Esther Seine December 14, 1792 in Rowan Co, NC.⁽²⁾ (Esther Seine is #1801.) Esther was born in Maryland. "Heritage of Old Buncombe Co. NC, Vol. II", p.119, article 95 by Torrey S. Paulsen, says name is Seine, sometimes misread as Leine. Says Esther and John Harwood both from MD, quotes census of dau. Rebecca both parents b. in MD.

His will of April 17, 1805, probated in 1805, left his home plantation to his wife Esther, to go thereafter to his sons John and Esquire who were then under age. The will mentioned his daughters Rebecca and Esther.

Although he has elsewhere been known as Squire Harwood (Sr.), in his father's will, he was called Esquire.

It appears that he died during the 1860s, as the 1870 census showed his sons each with similarly valued real estate.

The ancestry of this James Arrowood is arguable. His descendant, James Fox Bruhl, who wrote often about this line in the periodical, "Familes of Yancey County," assigned no father to him. Other researchers have proposed that the son of William Arrowood was the James who married Lavicia Hunter.

The latter James has two conflicting bits of circumstantial evidence. He was married in Macon County, in proximity to the alternate father candidate, James Arrowood of Macon County. Favoring his descent from William is the fact that, of the two Jameses, only he and Lavicia named a son "William." Opposing that descent is his age, too young to be one of the first two sons of William, but just right to be James of Macon's second son.

For this present James, the argument is by association. He married a sister of his presumed brother William's wife. He also seems to be the only candidate for one of William Sr.'s two eldest sons, who were living before 1820 (one was gone by 1830).

She married Nineveh Roberts. (Nineveh Roberts is #1260.) Nineveh was born circa 1822. Nineveh was the son of Robert Gaines Roberts and Mary (Polly) Deweese. Nineveh died April 27, 1899 at 76 years of age. Andrew was the son of Isaac Henry Ingle and Mary (Ingle). 23 July 1861 he enlisted at age 36 near his home in Buncombe County in Company K of the 25th NC Infantry Regiment. Polly was born circa 1847 in Buncombe Co, NC.⁽⁴⁶⁾ Polly was the daughter of Nineveh Roberts and Malinda Harwood. Polly died March 9, 1927 in Locust Grove, NC, at 79 years of age. Conflicting evidence states that Polly was born March 12, 1849 in Big Ivy, Yancey Co, NC.

He enlisted September 14, 1862, for the war, as a private in Company F, 69th Regiment of North Carolina Troops, also known as the 7th Regiment of North Carolina Cavalry.⁽⁴⁷⁾
