The name "Garrowood" is seen in the census records of North Carolina in the early 1800s. Interestingly, the given names seem to correspond with those of the sons of John Harrawood, who was in Rowan County, NC before 1811, although the Garrowoods seem to be a bit older. No wills of the earlier Garrowoods have been located.

After the 1820 census of Rowan County, the Garriwoods next appear in the 1850 census in Davie County, which was created in 1836 entirely out of Rowan County.

He married twice. He married Sarah (Garriwood). Sarah was born circa 1777 in North Carolina. She was listed as a household member of Nathaniel Garrowood's house in the Census of 1850 in Davie Co, NC.⁽²⁾ He married Sarah (Garriwood). Sarah was born circa 1790 in North Carolina. She was listed as a household member of Richard Foster's house in the Census of 1850 in Davie Co, NC.⁽³⁾

This is a collective ancestor for the Garriwoods found in the 1850 census of Davie County.

There were two older women named Sarah listed then - one age 60 in the household of Richard Foster and his wife Eliza, and one age 73 in the household of Nathaniel Garriwood, presumably his mother, the testatrix of 1843/1855. The children mentioned in her will have been listed with the 73 year old here, while none have been assigned to the 60 year old, who might very well have been the same person found in two different households.
