1. Ancestor¹ Earwood birth date unknown.

The Earwood family seems always to have been distinct from the Arrowood and Harwood families in the early Carolinas, with the exception of an occasional improvisation by a census enumerator. There does appear to have been some confusion with respect to the Yearwood family.

This common ancestor is purely hypothetical - no trace of any such person has been found in public records. He is given here simply to tie together the two men who were over age 45 in the 1800 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Ancestor Earwood had the following children:

• 8 vii. Martin Earwood was born before 1758. In 1778 Martin was taxed on property valued at 120 pounds in Capt. Lopp's District in Rowan Co, NC.⁽²⁾

  Apart from his single appearance on a tax roll, there is no other record of this man. Since no other Earwood was named on the 1778 tax roll, it's conceivable that Martin was the middle name of either Thomas or William Earwood. Or, perhaps he's the missing husband of Mary Earwood, apparently a widow in the 1790 census.
