1. Isaac1 Butner(1) (#124) was born in maybe, Maryland before 1741.(2) Isaac died in maybe, Madison Co, KY.
His name appeared on a tax list in Rowan County, North Carolina, as early as 1762, and again in 1770. In 1778, he
was on a list of non-jurors in Rowan County. This would have been made up of those who had not yet signed an oath of allegiance to the new
state government.
It is likely that his marriage took place during this time. Since posting of a marriage bond with the
government was expensive, poor people usually just posted banns at the local church, and most records of those have been lost.
In 1791, he was taxed in Madison County, Kentucky, on one horse. November 13, 1792, he was taxed on four horses, and had to pay an
additional poll tax for a boy of age 16-20. October 15, 1793, he and the boy had only one horse, with six cattle. By May 6, 1794, they had
added another horse. He wasn't found there in the next two years, but by April 20, 1797, he and a boy were back to one horse (cattle weren't
being taxed anymore.) The tax list for 1798 is lost; on May 22, 1799, the tax collector found him and a horse, with one boy 16-20 who can't
have been the same one as before. The turn of the century found him on June 21 with neither a boy nor a horse; his neighbor was Wm. Butner,
age 16-20, who had one horse. On May 3, 1802 he again had a boy and two horses; by April 11, 1803 they were back to only one horse, and were
taxed on the same date as Adam Butner and his land on Tate's Creek.
In the years 1804 and 1805 he was in Christian County,
where he participated in a land venture with Edward, Adam, and William Butner. The 1803 tax book had shown Edward as the resident on four
400 acre parcels, each one entered in the name of one of the four Butners. The 1804 tax roll named each Butner resident on his own parcel on
March 29, which probably was not the actuality. The 1805 book has suffered water damage and is difficult to read. On April 10 of that year,
Edward appears to have been taxed as resident on two parcels; July 19 found Isaac apparently on the other two. The syndicate ended sometime
thereafter, as on June 10, 1806, Edward was taxed on a 400 acre parcel entered in his own name and a 200 acre parcel entered as William
Butner's. The next line had James Harkings on 400 acres entered in the name of Isaac Butner.
May 10, 1806, found Isaac back in
Madison County with two horses; his neighbors were John, over 21, and Isaac Jr., 16-20. The 1807 tax book is quite dim; there are missing
parts of 1808 and 1809, and 1810 is all lost. The 1811 Madison County tax roll lists Isaac Butner Senr. and Isaac Butner Jr. adjacent, each
with one horse; no watercourse identifies their location, but they may have been near Adam Butner, listed eight lines before them on Tates
Creek. The last record of Isaac Butner in Madison County was in 1812, when he had 20 acres on Tates Creek, and three horses, listed between
John Butner, landless, and Charles Burris with 150 acres, followed by Adam Butner with 75 acres, both on Tates Creek. Adam Butner wasn't
found in the 1813 roll; in 1814 his acreage had increased to 100 acres, which could have been an approximation that included Isaac's 20.
Isaac Butner had the following children:
-
3
ii.
William Butner (#1216) was born in probably, Rowan Co, NC before 1783.
William first
appeared on the tax list of Madison County, Kentucky, on June 21, 1800, when he was over age 16, but under 21, with one horse, next to Isaac
Butner. The previous year, Isaac had a boy of that age with him. William's name was next mentioned in 1803 as a member of the four-Butner
land venture in Christian County. No evidence that he lived beyond that year has been found.
On July 8, 1803, a William Butner
was taxed in Madison County as over 21, with four horses and a black slave over 16 years. Such wealth leads the author to conclude that this
new William was the older man from North Carolina, the son of David Butner.
2. Edward2 Butner (Isaac1) (#2702) was born in maybe, Rowan Co, NC before 1777.(3) Edward died of his wounds November 8, 1811 near the battle scene in Indiana, at 34 years of
age.(4)
He married Martha (Patsy) Almon March 10, 1804 in Christian Co, KY.(5) (Martha (Patsy) Almon is #2703.) Martha was born circa 1785. Martha was the
daughter of Thomas Almon. Martha applied for a marriage license to wed William Steele September 24, 1813 in Gibson Co,
IN.(6)
He may have been the Edward Butner recorded on the 1797 tax roll of Montgomery County, Kentucky, with one horse.(7)
On April 5, 1800, an Edward Butler was taxed in Christian County; that Butler name doen't reappear. March 30, 1801, found Edward Butner and
Thomas Almon, neither with land. On July 29 and 30, 1802, they each had 400 acres on the Pond River. From 1803 to 1805, the Butner family
venture of four 400 acre parcels on the Pond River was noted in the tax books. June 10, 1806, found Edward with one 400 and one 200 acre
parcel of the original four. From 1807 to 1809 he had only 200 acres. The 1810 census taker found him in nearby Hopkins County, apparently
with no land.(8)
In the 1810 Census, Edward was listed as a head of household in Hopkins Co, KY.(9) He and his wife were age 26-44, with three girls under age 10.
By 1811 Edward moved with his father-in-law Thomas Almon to Indiana. Before Oct. 25, 1811, he had joined Capt. David
Robb's company of mounted riflemen of the Indiana Militia. They marched under General William Henry Harrison's orders to Tippecanoe.
November 7, 1811 Edward was mortally wounded at the Battle of Tippecanoe in Indiana. He died the next day.
Edward's estate was probated in 1812 in Knox Co, IN.(10)
Edward Butner and Martha (Patsy) Almon had the following children:
4. John2 Butner (Isaac1) (#2700) was born in probably, Rowan Co, NC circa 1784.(15)
He married twice. He married Mildred Burris circa 1816.(16) (Mildred Burris is #2919.) Mildred was born circa 1797 in probably, Madison Co, KY.
Mildred was the daughter of Charles Burris and Elizabeth Kidwell. He married Isabella (Butner)
after 1843.(17) This marriage hasn't yet been found. First wife
Mildred was living in 1842. (Isabella (Butner) is #2701.)
Isabella was born circa 1791 in Kentucky.
10 May 1806 John was taxed as an adult with no property listed between Isaac Sr. and Jr. in Madison Co, KY.(18) In the 1820 Census, John was listed as a head of household in
Madison Co, KY.(19) He and his wife were age 26-44, with two
boys and a girl under age 10.
In the 1830 Census, John was listed as a head of household in Boone Co, KY.(20) He and his wife were in their 40s, with two boys and a girl age 10-14, a boy 5-9, and a boy and a girl
under age 5.
30 Aug 1850 in the Census of 1850, John was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $1250 in Pendleton Co,
KY.(21) 19 June 1860 John was listed as a household
member of Hiram Blackburn's house in the Census of 1860 in Pendleton Co, KY.(22) In that record, John Butner owned real estate worth $700.
He is likely the
father of the three young men who joined the army in Madison County to fight in the Mexican War.
John Butner and Mildred Burris had the following children:

family for more information. Isaac died 1865 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at 75 years of age. Isaac was buried in Harmony
Cemetery, Bartholomew Co, IN.(24)
He married Agnes Alexander.(25) (Agnes
Alexander is #63.) Agnes was born circa 1796. See her father's family for more information.
Agnes(26) was the daughter of James Alexander.
Agnes died between 1844 and 1850 in maybe, Jefferson Co, IN, at 48 years of age.(27) In James Alexander's will written November 12, 1843 in Jefferson Co, IN, Agnes
Alexander was named as his daughter.(28)
He probably spent his boyhood in Madison County, Kentucky, where he appeared as a 16 year old in the tax book of 1807, with his father,
Isaac Sr., and his brother John.
In 1811 Isaac was taxed for himself and one horse in Madison Co, KY.(29) By 1812, he had come to Jefferson County, Indiana, where he would reside until his retirement. On Sept.
12, 1812, he enlisted as a private in Capt. Benjamin Miller's company of the 6th regiment of the Indiana militia, but apparently didn't get
into any fighting. After 1815, he began raising his family.
In the 1830 Census, Isaac was listed as a head of household in Jefferson Co, IN.(30) He and his wife were in their 30s, with three girls 10-14, a girl 5-9, and two girls under age 5.
On March 8, 1833, he bought 135 acres on Big Creek, near Dunlop in the northern part of Jefferson County. On the 15th of the same month, he
sold off two small pieces of his new land, 25 acres to Peter Smith and 10 acres to Jacob Nichols Jr. His wife, Agnes, signed the two sales
deeds.(31)
In the 1840 Census, Isaac was listed as a head of household in Jefferson Co, IN.(32) He was in his 50s, his wife in her 40s, with a boy and two girls 10-14, two girls 5-9, and a girl under
age 5.
In 1850 in the Census of 1850, Isaac was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $1200 in Lancaster Twp,
Jefferson Co, IN.(33) Only his youngest daughter, Martha, was
at home.
In 1854, he sold his land to George Pepper; an 1870s map at the Jefferson County Library in Madison identifies George Pepper's farm. Isaac
retired to live with his daughter Sarilda's family in Bartholomew County.(34)
Isaac Butner and Agnes Alexander had the following children:
6. Jesse2 Butner (Isaac1) (#2662) was born in Madison Co, KY circa 1790.(39)

In 1815 Jesse's name was on a tax roll in Indiana.(43)
Jesse had marriage banns to Rebecca Burris published January 3, 1825 in Madison Co, KY.(44) In the 1830 Census, Jesse was listed as a head of household in Madison Co,
KY.(45) He was in his 30s. In his household was a woman in her
20s, presumably his wife, with two boys and a girl under age 10. There was also a woman in her 40s and an old woman in her 70s.
In the 1840 Census, Jesse was listed as a head of household in Madison Co, KY.(46) He was in his 40s, his wife in her 30s, with two boys 10-14, a boy and a girl 5-9, and two girls under
age 5. There was also an old woman in her 90s. Two persons were engaged in agriculture.

and Ezekiel Overton, about the same age as Cornelius. In the 1830 census, nearby was Joshua Overton, age 60-69.
In the 1830
census, the family was living not far from Thomas Alman, Sr. and his presumed sons Thomas, Jr. and John. This association with her presumed

born circa 1827 in Ripley Co, IN. James(79) was the son of
John Waddle and Dorcas White. James died 1867 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at 40 years of age. She was a brave pioneer
woman who raised her family by her own efforts after the early death of her husband. She is probably the source of the family rumor that the
Waddles or the Butners were Quakers, but if she were one, she must have come to that faith late in her life, after her son William married a
Quaker woman. None of her other children were married in the Society of Friends.
Sarilda Butner and James Waddle had the following children:

In James Alexander's will written November 12, 1843 in Jefferson Co, IN, Agnes was named as his grandchild.(88) Probate of Isaac Butner's estate gives one share to grandchildren
William J. Howard sen (hard to read) Agnes Howard, for whom Samuel Stuckey is guardian. Disbursements show Isaac M. Howard $100 (the amount
of preliminary distribution to Martha Robinson) and W.J. Howard $13.70 (balance of one full share).
Agnes Butner and James Howard had the following children:

Beaver Crossing, Seward Co, NE.(120) His son Sherman, in an
autobigraphical sketch, described W. S. as "a strong 190 lb., six foot father." He related that they moved to Foraker, Oklahoma in
January, 1913, and back to Nebraska in May. While farming a few miles west of the town of Friend, the family acquired its first automobile -
a red Buick with no top. Bessie recalled that her mother used to dress in full driving regalia - a smart cap, tied on with a scarf, and a
full duster coat. W.S. never learned to drive - Loyd was the chauffeur.
After the world war, the family moved to Colorado. A letter from his mother-in-law, Martisha Barrett, Feb. 11, 1923, said he was living in
Haxtun, Colorado. After five years in Colorado, the family returned to Nebraska, and shortly thereafter moved to Carthage, Missouri, which
Sherman said "was my dad's birthplace." From the middle of the 1930s, he spent the remainder of his life in Friend, Nebraska.

37. Brown Co. Marr.Rec.Book B, p.373 : Joseph Robertson m. Martha Butner 6 Sep 1856 by Michael Tomey,
Elder (who also married a Mary Robertson to James Waddel 19 July 1855). This marriage occurred at the appropriate age for Isaac Butner's
daughter Martha. In Isaac's probate, she is referred to as Martha Robinson, but little seems to be known of her by the administrator, as her
children's names are unknown. Otherwise, there is no evidence to connect this marriage to Isaac's Martha.

most likely that he is the taxpayer of 1815 in Indiana, and perhaps a brother of Isaac; his son is the only 19th century Isaac
