Butner
1. Adam1 Butner birth date unknown. Adam died before 1777 in Rowan
Co, NC, at age unknown.
He married Mrs._Adam (Butner). Mrs._Adam was born circa 1710.
He came from Europe, probably in the 1730s. One researcher said he came on the ship "Robert and Alice," but supporting evidence has not
been found. Sometime thereafter, he settled near the village of Graceham, in the part of Prince Georges County, Maryland, that in 1744
became Frederick County.(1)
In August 1850 Adam accused the son of a local landowner of stealing his horse. It may have been this conflict with the local establishment
that prompted his move to North Carolina.(2)
The first mention of Adam in the records of North Carolina was 19 June 1853, when he appeared in a Rowan County court to register his cattle
brand, an A and B run together so that the right side of the A shared the vertical line on the left side of the B.(3)
The 1761 marriage license of Thomas Butner bears the signatures of two men named Adam Butner.
He bought property from Henry Eustace McCulloh 20 Jan 1763 in Rowan Co, NC.(4) The 1763 deed refers to "Adam Butner, Sr." Later records in the 1770s refer simply to "Adam Butner."
It may be inferred that the elder had passed on, and there was no longer a need to distinguish between the two.
Adam Butner and Mrs._Adam (Butner) had the following children:
