1. William1 Butner,(1) son of David Butner and Mary Crane, (#2608) was born in probably, Rowan Co, NC circa 1768.(2) See his father's family for more information. William died 1835 in Madison Co, KY, at 67 years of age.

He married Esther Kern February 5, 1795 in Rowan Co, NC.(3) (Esther Kern is #2609.) Esther was born circa 1768 in probably, Rowan Co, NC. Esther was the daughter of John Kern and Catherine (Kern). Esther died 1837 in Madison Co, KY, at 69 years of age. Holcomb's "Marriages of Rowan Co. NC 1753 - 1868" says Daniel Kern was bondsman, J. Troy witness. Daniel was probably her brother; Matthew Troy was a neighbor of David Butner and John Kern. Also cited in IGI batch M516006-2487."The Kern Family" pub. 1968 includes a map on p.10 showing David Butner and John Kern on touching lots. David's daughters married neighbors. The evidence would be overwhelming if only William and Esther had named a son "John". Perhaps he died before William's will.

He was appointed Lena (Serena) Butner's guardian 5 April 1830 in Madison Co, KY.(4) In the 1830 Census, William was listed as a head of household in Madison Co, KY.(5) He and his wife were in their 60s, with a young man and woman in their 20s and a girl under 5. There were eighteen slaves.

He made a will 9 June 1835 in Madison Co, KY.(6) William Butner wrote his will 9 June 1835 in Madison Co, KY.(7) He made bequests to wife Esther, son David, daughter Polly (Mrs. Durrell) Hubbard; to son William of the Baugh place gave slaves Isaac & Obadiah; to son James and his son Wallace & his daughter Anna.

He married Mary (Polly) Hubbard December 16, 1819 in Madison Co, KY.(8) (Mary (Polly) Hubbard is #2611.) Mary was born November 7, 1804 in Madison Co, KY. Mary died September 27, 1876 in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle Co, KY, at 71 years of age. David took out a bond to marry Mary (Polly) Hubbard December 13, 1819 in Madison Co, KY.(12) In 1830 in the census David was listed as residing in Madison Co, KY.(13) Will dated 3 Mar 1837, recorded 3 Apr 1837 on p.275 of Madison Co. Will Book F. Assigns Green Hubbard to oversee farm for wife Polly. Gives horses to son William, dau. Esther Ann. Will Book G p.46 distributes his land to widow Mary, sons Wm A., Albert F.,James F., John C., and dau. Esther Ann (Mrs. Breckinridge Graves).

David Butner and Mary (Polly) Hubbard had the following children:

3. William2 Butner Jr. (William1) (#2614) was born in maybe, Madison Co, KY circa 1800. William died March 1838 in Madison Co, KY, at 37 years of age.(15)

He married twice. He married Margaret Belsher September 16, 1825 in Madison Co, KY.(16) That this is the marriage of William Jr. is supported by the match of the 1825 date with the 2 young children in the 1830 census, and by the marriage of his brother James to Matilda Belsha. (Margaret Belsher is #2615.)

Margaret was born circa 1805 in maybe, Madison Co, KY. Margaret was the daughter of Jesse Belshe and Frances (Belshe). Margaret died in maybe, Madison Co, KY. He married Ann Eliza Jennings March 19, 1834 in Garrard Co, KY.(17) That he is the husband of Ann Eliza Jennings is supported by Madison County, Kentucky, Deeds Vol.X p.500, selling her interest in a brother's estate, where the couple are of Howard County, Missouri, where William's daughter Matilda was later given to guardianship of William's brother James. William took out a bond to marry Margaret Belsher September 9, 1825 in Madison Co, KY.(20) In the 1830 Census, William was listed as a head of household in Madison Co, KY.(21) He and his wife were in their 20s, with a boy and a girl under age 5.

He was listed as a neighbor of William Butner in the 1830 Census in Madison Co, KY.(22) He and his wife were in their 60s, with a young man and woman in their 20s and a girl under 5. There were eighteen slaves.

William's estate was probated 1 April 1839 in Madison Co, KY. Inventory of the estate of William Butner Jr., returned 1 Apr. 1839, included slaves named Isaac & Obadiah, matching a bequest from his father in 1835. The estate sale 8 Mar. 1839 was recorded in Will Book G p.157, 27 May 1839. G:310 has adm. settlement (assets $4873.89, bal. $4090.20); no widow; 5 minor children James, Elizabeth F., John, Mary Ann, Matilda. James Shearer is guardian of James & Mary Ann. Robert C. Patterson gdn. of Elizabeth F. John & Matilda have no guardian. Some slaves were sold to a Wm Butner; there was a note from a James Butner.

William Butner Jr. and Margaret Belsher had the following children:

4. Polly2 Butner (William1) (#2613) was born in maybe, Madison Co, KY December 8, 1803. Polly died October 19, 1859 in Boone Co, MO, at 55 years of age. Her remains were interred in 1859 at Little Bonne Femme Cemetery in Boone Co, MO.(24)

She married Durrell Hubbard November 18, 1819 in Madison Co, KY.(25) (Durrell Hubbard is #2612.) Durrell was born December 2, 1799 in maybe, Madison Co, KY. (Additional notes for Durrell Hubbard(26)) Durrell died March 18, 1864 in Boone Co, MO, at 64 years of age. Durrell was buried 1864 in LittleBonneFemme, Church Cemetery, Boone Co, MO.(27) Durrell's estate was probated May 23, 1864 in Boone Co, MO.

Polly Butner and Durrell Hubbard had the following child:

5. James2 Butner (William1) (#2616) was born in maybe, Madison Co, KY circa 1805. James died November 1859 in Chariton Co, MO, at 54 years of age.(29)

He married Matilda Belsha after April 6, 1828 (bond date) in Madison Co, KY.(30) (Matilda Belsha is #2617.) Matilda was born circa 1805 in maybe, Madison Co, KY. Matilda was the daughter of Jesse Belshe and Frances (Belshe). Matilda died in 1875 in Chariton Co, MO, at 70 years of age. 3 July 1860 in the Census of 1860, Matilda was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $4000 in Buffalo Lick Twp, Chariton Co, MO.(31)

James took out a bond to marry Matilda Belsha April 6, 1828 in Madison Co, KY.(32) He was appointed Matilda Butner's guardian 19 March 1838 in Howard Co, MO.(33) In the 1840 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Chariton Co, MO.(34) He and his wife were in their 30s, with a girl 10-14 and a boy and a girl 5-9. There were five slaves.

In 1850 in the Census of 1850, James was listed as a farmer and head of household with real estate of $2400 in Buffalo Lick Twp, Chariton Co, MO.(35)

James and his son Wallace and daughter Anna are mentioned in father William's will.

6. William A.3 Butner (David2, William1) (#2628) was born in Madison Co, KY November 12, 1820. William died October 31, 1909 at 88 years of age. William was buried in Kingston, prob. Madison Co, KY.

During the Civil War he was said to have served in General Price's Regiment. He was captured and sent to Rock Island Prison.

He is featured in an article on pp.768-769 of "History of Chariton and Howard Cos. Missouri" by T.B. Smith & Pearl S. Gehrig, pub. 1923. There is a picture of his family. Details of his parents, siblings, and children, and his wife's family, are given. He is said to have spent his entire life on the same farm near Salisbury. His Confederate service, and his brother's fate, are mentioned. He and his family were members of the Presbyterian Church at Roanoke MO.
