-
3
ii.
Shadrach Barrett (#525) was born in perhaps, Virginia circa 1760.
His name was one of a
biblical trio, and begs the question, "Where were the others?" Orphans of Mesheck Barrett were listed in Patrick County, Virginia, in
1795. Another Mashach Barrett was in Stokes County, North Carolina, in 1810. No record of any Abednego has been found.
In the
lists that survive of inhabitants of Henry County, Shadrach's name was usually next to Francis.

Francis Barrett (#524) was born in probably, Tennessee February 20, 1762. Francis died January 20, 1793 in
Patrick Co, VA, at age 30.
2. John2 Barrett (Ancestor of1) (#112) was born in maybe Halifax Co, VA circa 1752. John died after 1840 in probably,
Buncombe Co, NC, at age unknown.
When he was eighty four years old, John Barrett applied for a pension based on his Revolutionary War service. He begged allowance that his
advanced age made recollection of the particulars difficult, but recounted his service as best he could remember. Around the first of
January, 1781, he volunteered for a three month term in the Virginia militia, in Henry County, under Captain George Hairston. They marched
to Guilford County, North Carolina, where they joined the main army, under the command of Colonel (or maybe General) Lawson. That force
marched to Ramsour's Mills, and thence to Cape Fear on the Carolina coast. There, on April 23, 1781, his term of service expired, and he was
given a written discharge. He made his way over two hundred miles back home to Henry County.
Around the end of May or first of June, 1781, he again was drafted or volunteered, under Captain Eliphas Shelton, to suppress and take some
"out layers or Tory as they were then called." They marched to Hambry's on Maho River in Henry County, where they stayed until the last of
June or first of July, when the enemy dispersed, and the company returned home. Not being discharged, they were immediately ordered to march
to a place called Rhoda Moore's in the hollows of Dan River, where they took some prisoners. The enemy again scattered, and the troops once
more returned home, with orders to be in readiness to march at a moments warning. In a few days, they heard that a party of Tories or out
layers was in the settlement of Hudgepaths, on Dan River. Captain Shelton's company marched to that place, where they caught several out
layers, routed the Tories, and after a short time returned home. Their term of enlistment having expired, around the last of September, or
October, 1781, John recalled that he was discharged by the Captain verbally, with the promise of a written discharge to be given later. He
remembered participating in one or two more short expeditions against the out layers, but couldn't recall the dates.
He bought land in Buncombe County on Bald Mountain Creek from William Halloway Sr. on Sept. 24, 1798. In 1801 he bought another 100 acres
nearby on Bald Mountain Creek; in 1802 45 acres more. In 1805 he bought 25 acres on Paint Fork of Ivy Creek, near William Barrett's 1804
purchase. In 1806 he bought 100 acres on Big Ivy from Ward Barret. The same year he acquired 200 acres on Ivy from John Turner. In 1811 he
bought another 100 acres on Bald Mountain Creek.
In January, 1808, the Buncombe County court recorded the sale of the estate of Julius Robinson. John Barrett bought "a case and razors"
for $1.00, and "one horse beast" for $25.(1)
At the July 1811 term of the Buncombe County Court, he was appointed to be an administrator of the estate of George Rogers. John Barrett's
relationship to the Rogers family hasn't been discovered. His co-administrator was William Rogers, which
was the name of one of the Justices of the court, and who was probably the son of John. William's sister had a mother-in-law named Bathsheba
Barrett. William's son would later, in Clay County, Kentucky, marry Levicia Barrett. No relationship with either of these woman is
evident.(2)
On Oct. 4, 1830, he transferred all of his property to his son David Barret in return for a contract of support, to "subsist free from
want," for the remainder of his life.
In June, 1832, at age eighty four, he applied in Buncombe County for a Revolutionary War pension. He filed additional papers in May of 1836.
His claim was finally rejected after he was unable to document a sufficient length of service to qualify for a pension.
1840 US Census probably enumerates John at 88 years of age as a resident of the household of David Barrett in Buncombe Co,
NC.
John Barrett had the following child:
4. Mesheck2 Barrett (Ancestor
of1)(3) (#1415) was born in
perhaps, Virginia circa 1760. Mesheck died before 1795 in probably, Patrick Co, VA, at age unknown.
No record of Meshack Barrett has been found in Henry County. In adjacent Patrick County, formed from Henry County
in October, 1790, Court Order Book "O", page 97, records on Friday, May 1, 1795, the binding out of Elizabeth, Lucynda, and Dicy Barrett,
orphans of Mesheck Barrett.

5. Another Virginia2 Barrett (Ancestor of1) (#5687) was born in probably, Virginia around the early 1760s.
There's really no clue as to how young Isom Barrett, age 16-25, popped up in Buncombe County in the 1810 census, on
the same page as John and Miles. Presumably he's not John's, as no such boy was recorded in the 1800 census. Miles wasn't found in 1800, but
he went to Tennessee, while this Isom went to Kentucky. Perhaps he's a nephew; maybe son of the missing James.
Another Virginia Barrett had the following child:
7. Miles2 Barrett (Ancestor of1) (#529) was born circa 1763. Miles died circa 1832 in Greene Co, TN, at age unknown.

Judith was born circa 1760 in perhaps, Virginia. Judith died circa 1825 in Hawkins Co, TN, at age unknown.
In 1855, his eldest child, Mary Lawson, applied for a bounty land grant based on Miles' service in the Revolution.
Mary testified that she thought her father had served under Colonel Penn. She related that her father had lived in Buncombe County, North
Carolina, and later moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee, where his wife, Judith, died in 1825 or 1826. Then Miles moved to Green County,
Tennessee, near Pougs Bridge, eight miles north of Greenville. He died in Green County in 1832 or 1833.

-
14

In her
affidavit of application for her father's bounty land grant, she stated on March 3, 1855 that she would soon be age seventy two, and was the
eldest chiled of Miles Barrett. Her husband, Thomas Lawson, testified that he thought her father had been married in Patrick County,
Virginia.

of1)(4) (#4499) was born in
probably, Tennessee circa 1763. Ward died 1854 in Cannon Co, TN, at age 91.
Ward's estate was probated 1854 in Cannon Co, TN.
Ward Barrett's will, written in 1842, was brought
to probate by his son-in-law in January, 1854, in Cannon County. Calling himself Ward Barrett Sr., he wrote, "For the consideration of the
love and affection that I have toward my son in law Allen Morgan and his family it is my will that after my Death and that of my wife) and I
bequeath unto him ... my tract of land whereon him and we now live containing Two hundred acres and is the same land that Hamen Barrett
bought of one John Travis and the said Travis deeded to me." He willed that one horse, "Brute", be sold and the proceeds divided among
all of his sons. After the death of his wife, his household furnishings were to be divided between his two daughters, Molly Young and Selva

Elizabeth died 1873 at age 85. Her remains were interred in Tomotla, Cherokee Co, NC.(6)

a boy 5-9, and a boy and a girl under age 5.
