1. Sterling Tucker¹ Barrett, son of John Barrett and Malinda Arrowood, was born in probably, Yancey Co, NC January 1847. See his father's family for more information. Sterling died 1943 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 96.

He married twice. He married M. A. Sexton March 3, 1869 in Laurel Co, KY. M. was born circa 1850 in "Missing Place" no. 1192. (Additional notes for M. A. Sexton⁽¹⁾) M. died at age unknown.

There is no family tradition of this first marriage. Her fate is unknown. Whatever happened, it's likely to have had something to do with S. T.'s move to Indiana.

He married Martisha Ann Waddle November 13, 1873 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽²⁾ Martisha was born January 1850 in Elizabethtown, Bartholomew Co, IN. Martisha was the daughter of James Waddle and Sarilda Butner. Martisha died 1925 in Norcatur, KS, at age 75.

A family tradition says he drove a commissary wagon in the Civil War, and that six of his brothers also served in the war. The records of two of them, and of a brother in law, have been identified, on the Union side.

In the 1880 Census, Sterling was listed as a head of household 1880 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽³⁾ 1885 Sterling was taxed for one cow and no horse and 100 acres of land valued at $200 in Laurel Co, KY.⁽⁴⁾ In the 1900 Census, Sterling was listed as a head of household 1900 in Jennings Co, IN.⁽⁵⁾ He was renting a farm there.

In the early 1900s he was living near his daughter, Lessie, near Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. In the early 1920s, he was again near Lessie outside of Paoli, Colorado. By 1925, he had settled near his son Angus around Norcatur, Kansas; it was there that Martisha died and was buried. He ended his days with his daughter Linnie, in Bartholomew County, Indiana.

Sterling Tucker Barrett and Martisha Ann Waddle had the following children:

• 5 iv. Rilda Barrett⁽⁷⁾ was born in Kentucky April 1884.⁽⁸⁾ Rilda died 1904 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 20. Her body was interred in Burnsville, Christian Church, Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽⁹⁾ Also called Rilla, she was probably named after her grandmother, Sarilda.

2. Melessa (Lessie) Belle² Barrett (Sterling Tucker¹) was born in Bartholomew Co, IN September 8, 1874. Her given name may come as something of a surprise to those who only knew her as Lessie, but the 1880 census of her father's family shows her named "Malessa." Melessa died July 19, 1965 in Friend, Saline Co, NE, at age 90.

She married William Sherman Marcum October 20, 1892 in Bartholomew Co, IN. William was born October 7, 1869 in Bartholomew Co, IN. William⁽¹¹⁾ was the son of John Marcum and Amelia (Milley) M. O'Neal. William died December 23, 1955 in Friend, Saline Co, NE, at age 86. His son Sherman, in an autobigraphical sketch, described W. S. as "a strong 190 lb., six foot father." He related that they moved to Foraker, Oklahoma in January, 1913, and back to Nebraska in May. While farming a few miles west of the town of Friend, the family acquired its first automobile - a red Buick with no top. Bessie recalled that her mother used to dress in full driving regalia - a smart cap, tied on with a scarf, and a full duster coat. W.S. never learned to drive - Loyd was the chauffeur.

After the world war, the family moved to Colorado. A letter from his mother-in-law, Martisha Barrett, Feb. 11, 1923, said he was living in Haxtun, Colorado. After five years in Colorado, the family returned to Nebraska, and shortly thereafter moved to Carthage, Missouri, which Sherman said "was my dad's birthplace." From the middle of the 1930s, he spent the remainder of his life in Friend, Nebraska.

Melessa (Lessie) Belle Barrett and William Sherman Marcum had the following children:

Grace Edith³ Marcum was born in Bartholomew Co, IN December 14, 1894.⁽¹²⁾ Grace died February 17, 1979 in Friend, Saline Co, NE, at age 84.⁽¹³⁾ She married Corydon Hulse August 1918 in Friend, Saline Co, NE. Corydon was born. Corydon died at age unknown. She was married just before Bessie Marcum's 16th birthday. They had a combined wedding reception and birthday party.

• 8 ii. Mabel Marcum was born in Bartholomew Co, IN February 7, 1897.⁽¹⁴⁾ Mabel died March 5, 1897 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age unknown.⁽¹⁵⁾

• 9 iii. Loyd Angus Marcum was born in Bartholomew Co, IN March 9, 1898.⁽¹⁶⁾ Loyd died November 11, 1993 in Beatrice, NE, at age 95. His body was interred November 1993 in Utica, NE. He married Hazel Stoker circa 1920 in Paoli, Phillips Co, CO. Hazel was born February 18, 1901 in York Co, NE. (Additional notes for Hazel Stoker⁽¹⁷⁾) Hazel died February 17, 1981 in Fairbury, Jefferson Co, NE, at age 79. Her body was interred February 19, 1981 in Utica, NE.

  Conflicting evidence states that Loyd was born March 22, 1898 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽¹⁸⁾

Glenn Arthur Marcum was born in Utica, York Co, NE November 20, 1900.⁽¹⁹⁾ Glenn died September 1980 in Sterling, Logan Co, CO, at age 79.⁽²⁰⁾ He married Hazel (Marcum) circa 1922 in Paoli, Phillips Co, CO. Hazel was born circa 1906.⁽²¹⁾ Hazel died at age unknown. Hazel was divorced from Glenn Arthur Marcum in "Missing Place" no. 1090.

• 11 v. Bessie Maree Marcum was born in Utica, York Co, NE August 24, 1902. Bessie died Jan. 2, 1996 in Long Beach, CA, at age 93. She married Paul Eugene Clark August 15, 1936 in San Francisco, CA. Paul was born May 17, 1899 in Rico, Dolores Co, CO. Paul was the son of Edward Burton Clark and Margaret Viola Gillmore. Paul died June 28, 1968 in Long Beach, CA, at age 69. On Christmas day of 1929, she rode the train from Denver to Los Angeles, to work at the Raymond Hotel in Pasadena. In late summer of the next year, she and her friend took a boat to San Francisco. Her first job there was in the dining room of the Emporium department store.

• 12 vi. Dick Norval Marcum was born in Utica, York Co, NE December 1, 1905. Dick died 1988 in Sterling CO, at age 82.

• 13 vii. Sherman Norris Marcum was born in Utica, York Co, NE February 27, 1907.⁽²²⁾ Sherman died January 28, 1982 in Loveland, Larimer Co, CO, at age 74.⁽²³⁾ His body was interred February 1982 in Loveland Burial, Loveland, Larimer Co, CO.⁽²⁴⁾

3. Malinda (Linnie)² Barrett (Sterling Tucker¹) was born in Indiana circa 1876. Malinda died after 1965 at age unknown.⁽²⁶⁾

She married Ulysses Grant O'Neal November 28, 1894 in Bartholomew Co, IN.⁽²⁷⁾ Ulysses was born September 1868 in Indiana. Ulysses was the son of Andrew O'Neal and Ann Burns. Ulysses died at age unknown. Although she was known by the name "Linnie," the 1880 census of S.T.Barrett's family shows her with the name "Malinda," presumably after her grandmother.

• 18 ii. Carl Ray O'Neal was born in Bartholomew Co, IN August 28, 1899.⁽³⁰⁾ Carl died September 1968 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 69.⁽³¹⁾ Conflicting evidence states that Carl was born August 20, 1899.⁽³²⁾

• 19 iii. Harold Lloyd O'Neal was born in Bartholomew Co, IN May 19, 1901.⁽³³⁾ Harold died February 1982 in Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 80.⁽³⁴⁾

• 20 iv. infant daughter O'Neal was born in Bartholomew Co, IN August 22, 1903.⁽³⁵⁾ Infant died January 1, 1904 in "Missing Place" no. 999, at age unknown.⁽³⁶⁾

• 21 v. Ernest Lee O'Neal was born in Bartholomew Co, IN June 12, 1906.⁽³⁷⁾ Ernest died 1956 at age 50. Conflicting evidence states that Ernest was born circa 1907 in Indiana.⁽³⁸⁾

4. Alta E.² Barrett (Sterling Tucker¹) was born in Bartholomew Co, IN April 1880.⁽⁴⁶⁾ Alta died 1936 at age 56.

She married Thomas Jefferson Gary circa 1901. Thomas was born October 1869 in Jennings Co, IN. Thomas⁽⁴⁷⁾ was the son of Thomas J. Gary and Rebecca Jane Oliver. Thomas died 1957 at age 87. He hasn't been located in the 1900 census. In 1910, the census recorded that he had been married two times, presently for nine years. The family was living in a rented house in Beaver Township, in York County, Nebraska, in 1910. In 1920, they were residing on a farm in West Blue Township.

Alta E. Barrett and Thomas Jefferson Gary had the following children:

• 28 i. Jesse Gladys³ Gary was born in Indiana August 23, 1902.

• 29 ii. Pattie Lois Gary was born in Bartholomew Co, IN December 4, 1904.⁽⁴⁸⁾ She married William C. Johnson. William was born December 27, 1903.⁽⁴⁹⁾ William died December 1967 in Friend, Saline Co, NE, at age 63.⁽⁵⁰⁾

• 34 vii. Lawrence Elroy Gary was born in Nebraska May 10, 1916.⁽⁵¹⁾ Lawrence died July 2, 1988 in Canoga Park, Los Angeles Co, CA, at age 72.⁽⁵²⁾

6. Angus² Barrett (Sterling Tucker¹)⁽⁵³⁾ was born in Indiana July 10, 1887.⁽⁵⁴⁾ Angus died May 1966 in Elizabethtown, Bartholomew Co, IN, at age 78.⁽⁵⁵⁾

He married twice. He married Maude Kelly circa 1911. Maude was born. Maude died 1922 at age unknown. He married Myrtle Dimmett circa 1936. Myrtle was born.

Angus Barrett and Maude Kelly had the following children:
