  In an affidavit dated August 5, 1898, William said he was still married to C. S. Guthrey, whom he had married May 13, 1866.

He served on the Confederate side in the Civil War. His name has not been found on any surviving roster, so it isn't known if he fought with one of the regular Georgia regiments, or was a member of the state militia. Both were engaged in the defense of Atlanta. Louise's second husband reported a trip to Georgia after the war, where he met his old friend Louise "whose husband had been killed in the fighting at Stone Mountain and burning of the depot on July 19, 1864." However, there was little contact between the opposing forces on the 19th. On July 20 the Battle of Peachtree Creek took place, in which the Georgia regiments in General Hardee's Corp took losses.⁽⁶⁶⁾
