1. Nathaniel1 Arrowood, son of James Arrowood of Maryland, was born in maybe, Maryland before 1764. See his father's family for his ancestry. Nathaniel died before 1790 at age unknown.
He married Ann (Arrowood) date unknown. Ann was born before 1766. (Additional notes for Ann
(Arrowood)(1)) Ann died date unknown at age unknown.
The only reference to this man by name is as a witness to the will of Peter Hammonds, written in Rowan County on March 1, 1788.(2)
He could be the other adult male enumerated with Zacariah in the 1790 census, or he could have gone back to Maryland, and the enumeratee
was another of Zachariah's brothers. To the author, it seems most likely that he was the deceased husband of Ann Arrowood, who was in Rowan
County in 1790 with a young boy and two women or girls. If he were son of James of Maryland, it's likely that his first son would be called
James.
Nathaniel Arrowood and Ann (Arrowood) had the following child:
2. James2 Arrowood (Nathaniel1)(4)
was born in Lincoln Co, NC circa 1790.(5) He told the 1850
census taker that he had been born in Lincoln County, North Carolina, in 1790, so it's possible that his father may have been one of the two
Arrowood men who were found there in the 1790 census, namely Zachariah and his brother John Arrowood, the Revolutionary War veteran.
However, since this James Arrowood named a son Thomas, perhaps the eldest still living nearby since it was he who took possession of the
estate, consideration must be given to another resident of Lincoln County in 1790: Thomas Earwood. The author, however, finds compelling the
evidence that a Nathaniel Arrowood was born in Tennessee at just about the time James was married there.
James died February 14, 1858
in Macon Co, NC, at age 67. His body was interred 1858 in Mt.Zion Church, Macon Co, NC.(6)
He married three times. He married an unknown woman date unknown in maybe, Tennessee. She was
born circa 1791 in Tennessee. She died date unknown at age unknown. Family tradition has it that she may have been the
daughter of a parent who was a Cherokee Indian. As a youth, the author was told that Sterling T. Barrett, son of this woman's daughter
Malinda, was one-eighth Cherokee. Since Malinda, who would thus have been one-quarter Indian, said that her father had blue eyes, it must be
that all of her Indian heritage came through her mother. Malinda was probably born in White County, Tennessee, and perhaps her
mother's father appears on the same tax list with James Arrowood. One name is listed as "James Anderson, alias Little Turkey," whose
household included one white poll, presumably himself, and three black polls, not slaves, who might have been his half-Indian sons, as there
was no tax category for Indians. In the same affidavit where she described her father's appearance, Malinda Arrowood said that
she could just remember her mother before she died. The census of 1830 shows only one child over ten; this woman may have been gone by 1820,
when Malinda would have been about seven.
He married Winnie Davis circa 1820 in maybe, Buncombe Co, NC. Winnie was born circa 1791.
Winnie died after 1840 in Macon Co, NC, at age unknown. The only information discovered about her was the mention in the
affidavit of Malinda Arrowood, who said that she and John Barrett recalled visiting her orphan children for some years, before they left the
state after 1847. She was in her forties at the time of the 1840 pension; her last child seems to have been born a year earlier.
He married Martha Ford June 8, 1851 in Macon Co, NC. Martha was born circa 1822 in Buncombe Co,
NC. (Additional notes for Martha Ford(7)) Martha
died 1894 in probably Corbin, Whitley Co, KY, at age 72.
James was first recorded when his name appeared on the tax lists of White County, Tennessee, from 1811 to 1813, with no property. The lists
were made for each company of militia in the county. In 1811, he was in Capt. Joseph Neville's Company; in 1812 and 1813 he was listed with
Capt. William Ridge. He probably married there during that time.
On Sept. 20, 1814, in Sparta in White County, he joined Capt. Abner Pearce's Company of Drafted Foot Soldiers as a Private. They marched to
Fayetteville, Tennessee, where on Sept. 21, 1814, he was mustered into federal service in Capt./Col. James Logan's Company. He was
discharged there on April 1, 1815.
Where he spent the 1820s hasn't been documented, except that some of his children told the 1850 census taker that they were born in Buncombe
County, North Carolina, around 1825. Perhaps it was there and then that he married for the second time.
In the 1830 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Macon Co, NC.(8) Macon County was formed from Haywood County in 1828. James must have been among the first residents, as he
was there for the 1830 census, in his 40s, with a wife in her 30s. His household included four boys under 15 and three girls under 10.
In the 1840 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Macon Co, NC.(9) He was 50+; his wife was 40+. The earlier children were all still at home, and two more boys and five more
girls had joined them. No other Arrowood but James was in Macon County in 1840; the author has chosen to speculate that James and David,
married there in the 1840s, were his sons.
In the Census of 1850, James was listed as a head of household in Macon Co, NC.(10) His was said to be a carpenter. All six boys and five of the eight girls had left home by 1850; indeed,
the boys had left the county, and some remain unidentified. A new infant son, three daughters, one of them widowed with two children, and
his future third wife, with her daughter and mother and sister, filled his household. In 1850, four of his children, Josh (or
Joseph), Catherine, Powell, and Winney, were living together in Blount County, Tennessee. There, Winney married William Pennell; this group
is tied to the family by the appearance of their son, William Pennell, in the 1880 census, when he was called the nephew of Humphrey.
He resided until his death about eight miles from the town of Franklin, in Macon County.
James Arrowood and an unknown woman had the following children:
James Arrowood and Winnie Davis had the following children:
James Arrowood and Martha Ford had the following children:
In the 1900 Census, Polly was listed as a head of household 18 June 1900 in Whitley Co, KY.(15) She owned a farm near the town of Corbin, assisted by her nephew, George Mitchell, and
a hired man.
She was listed as George Mitchell's aunt in the 1910 Census in Whitley Co, KY.(16) She was listed as George Mitchell's aunt in the 1920 Census in Whitley Co, KY.(17) He was a car repairer for the railroad.
Although Edmond would have been barely sixteen by the end of the Civil War, he served in the Union army, in Company H of the 3rd Tennessee
Mounted Infantry. In James Arrowood's pension claim file is an affidavit by Edmond A.F. Arrowood, July 5, 1879, in Whitley Co.
KY, stating that he had his father James' bible in which he spelled his name "Arrowood", and that he had been with or near his mother,
Martha Arrowood, since his father's death, and that she had not remarried.
7. Sally3 Arrowood (James2, Nathaniel1) was
born in Buncombe Co, NC circa 1825. Sally died date unknown at age unknown.
She married Mr. Metcalf date unknown. He was born circa 1825 in maybe, North Carolina. He
died before 1850 in maybe, Yancey Co, NC, at age unknown.
Sally Arrowood and Mr. Metcalf had the following children:
10. Humphrey Posey3 Arrowood (James2, Nathaniel1)(71) was born in Macon Co, NC 1829. Humphrey died date unknown
at age unknown.
He married twice. He married Mary A. (Arrowood) before 1850 in maybe, Union Co, GA. Mary
was born circa 1828 in Pendleton Dist, GA. Mary died date unknown at age unknown. He married Mary
Crisp February 11, 1899 in Sugarfork, Macon Co, NC.(72)
Mary was born circa 1854. Mary died date unknown at age unknown. According to conflicting evidence, she married
Humphrey Posey Arrowood February 11, 1889 in Macon Co, NC.(73)
According to conflicting evidence, he married Mary Crisp February 11, 1889 in Macon Co, NC.(74)
Humphrey Posey Arrowood and Mary A. (Arrowood) had the following children:
11. Powell3 Arrowood (James2, Nathaniel1) was
born in North Carolina circa 1830. Powell died date unknown at age unknown.
He married Elizabeth (Arrowood) date unknown. Elizabeth was born circa 1827 in North Carolina.
Elizabeth died date unknown at age unknown.
He was listed as a neighbor of Josh D. Arrowood in the Census of 1850 in Blount Co, TN.(77) In the Census of 1850, Powell was listed as a head of household in Blount Co,
TN.(78) In the Minutes of Macon Co. Court in March 1858, a
list of insolvents includes Powell Arrowood, who was delinquent 50 cents balance of poll tax.
Powell Arrowood and Elizabeth (Arrowood) had the following child:
14. Catherine3 Arrowood (James2, Nathaniel1) was
born in North Carolina circa 1837. Catherine died date unknown at age unknown.
She married William T. Pannell November 21, 1850 in Blount Co, TN.(91) William was born circa 1831 in North Carolina. William died date unknown at age
unknown.
She was listed as a household member of Josh D. Arrowood's house in the Census of 1850 in Blount Co, TN.(92) She was listed as a neighbor of Powell Arrowood in the
