1. Nathan Lewis¹ Arrowood (#612) was born in North Carolina December 29, 1818.⁽¹⁾ It's uncertain who were his parents. The author has suggested that perhaps they were William Arrowood of Burke Co. NC and his wife Susan.⁽²⁾ However, a family history prepared by his grandson, John Francis Arrowood, says his parents were William Anderson and Susan Arrowood. Susan was said to be a full blood Cherokee, and that tribal custom gave to the children of the marriage the surname of the mother.⁽³⁾ Nathan died October 8, 1905 in Breathitt Co, KY, at age 86.⁽⁴⁾

He married Sarah Holland before 1845 in probably, North Carolina.⁽⁵⁾ (Sarah Holland is #611.) Sarah was born September 23, 1819 in Buncombe Co, NC. Sarah⁽⁶⁾ was the daughter of Robert Holland and Sarah Hensley. Sarah died February 22, 1894 in Breathitt Co, KY, at age 74.

He may have been named for Nathaniel Lewis, a neighbor of his grandfather in the 1810 census of Wilkes County, NC.

On 3 Dec 1862 Nathan and his son, William, enrolled in the Union Army in Company K of the 14th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. They were mustered in for one year at Irvine, KY, 14 Feb 1863, and were discharged at Camp Nelson, KY, 24 March 1864.⁽⁹⁾

He married America Raleigh 28 May 1886 in Canoe, Breathitt Co, KY.⁽⁷⁰⁾ (America Raleigh is #4998.) L. Arrowood of Kent and L. P. Arrowood of Breathitt County, several sisters, 51 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Two daughters and one son preceded him in death.
