First Generation

1. Henry1 Arrowood, son of James Arrowood of Maryland, was born, before 1775. See his father's family for more information. Henry died before 1810 at age unknown.

In the 1800 Census, Henry was listed as a head of household in Rowan Co, NC.(1) He was age 26-44 and his wife was 16-25. In the household were a girl 10-15, and two girls and a boy all under age 10. Care should be taken not to confuse this man with Henry Harawood, who resided in the same militia company in Rowan County.(2) Considerable puzzlement about their families arises from the fact that both Henrys died during the next decade. The author believes that the known will was written by the latter Henry Harawood.

He was listed as a neighbor of James Arrowood of Maryland in the 1800 Census in Rowan Co, NC.(3)

2. Richmond2 Arrowood (Henry1) was born in North Carolina, circa 1795. Richmond died date unknown at age unknown.

He married Temperance (Arrowood) date unknown. Temperance was born circa 1796 in North Carolina. Temperance died date unknown at age unknown.

In the 1840 Census, Richmond was listed as a head of household in Lincoln Co, NC.(4) Richmond was in his 40s. There was a woman in her 40s, and another woman in her 70s who has not been identified. There was a girl age 15-19, three girls 10-14, and two boys and a girl under age 5.

In the Census of 1860, Richmond was listed as a head of household in Catawba Co, NC.(5) In the Census of 1870, Richmond was listed as a head of household in Catawba Co, NC.(6)

The newsletter of The Genealogical Society of Rowan Co. NC, Vol.2 No.2, June 1988, p.34, includes an article titled "The Arts and Crafts in North Carolina", by James H. Craig, which cites unspecified Rowan Co. Court Records : "Basil Gaither takes Richd. Arwood, aged 8, as apprentice to the wheelwright's trade. 6 February 1801."

5. Gilbert (Gilford)3 Arrowood (Richmond2, Henry1)(12) was born in Lincoln Co, NC, circa 1835. Gilbert died July 1, 1863 in Gettysburg, PA, at age 28.

He married Amanda Huffman May 1, 1857 in Catawba Co, NC.(13) Amanda was born circa 1833 in North Carolina. In the Census of 1870, Amanda was listed as a head of household in Catawba Co, NC.(14)

In the Census of 1860, Gilbert was listed as a head of household in Catawba Co, NC.(15)

He was born in Catawba County, where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting there at age 26, on October 31, 1861, as a private in Company F of the 38th Regiment of North Carolina Troops. Rosters recorded him present or accounted for until he was wounded in the leg at or near Mechanicsville, Virginia, June 26, 1862.He returned to duty before January 1, 1863. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 1-4, 1863. He returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, when he was killed at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Gilbert (Gilford) Arrowood and Amanda Huffman had the following children:

6. Henry3 Arrowood (Richmond2, Henry1)(16) was born in probably, Lincoln Co, NC, circa 1840. Henry died date unknown at age unknown.

He married Mary (Arrowood) date unknown. Mary was born circa 1835 in North Carolina. Mary died date unknown at age unknown.

He was listed as a household member of Richmond Arrowood's house in the Census of 1860 in Catawba Co, NC.(17) In the Census of 1870, Henry was listed as a head of household in Catawba Co, NC.(18) He was listed as a neighbor of Richmond Arrowood in the Census of 1870 in Catawba Co, NC.(19)

When he was enumerated with Richmond Arrowood in the 1860 census, he was listed as idiotic.

8. Frances C.4 Arrowood (Gilbert (Gilford)3, Richmond2, Henry1) was born in Catawba Co, NC, circa 1863. Frances died date unknown at age unknown.

In the 1900 Census, Frances was listed as a head of household 7 June 1900 in Catawba Co, NC.(20) She was listed as James Alfred Arwood's mother in the 1910 Census in Catawba Co, NC.(21)
