First Generation

1. James1 Alexander (#126) was born between 1760 and 1770. Age 60s in 1830 census; 45+ in 1820. James died November 30, 1843 in Jefferson Co, IN, at 83 years of age. James was buried at Craig Cemetery (reloc to Fairmount Cem.) in Monroe Twp, Jefferson Co, IN.(1)

He married Mrs. James (Alexander). (Mrs. James (Alexander) is #127.)

The author believes that this may be Mary Trotter, who was called daughter Mary Alexander in the 1794 will of her father John Trotter of Scott County, Kentucky, and in the 1822 will of her mother Agnes Trotter of Jefferson County, Indiana. Note that James Alexander has children named John, Agnes, and Polly (Mary), as well as Joseph, which is the name of Mary Trotter's brother.

If indeed his wife was Mary Trotter, James may have been one of those several of his name who appear on the 1790 tax roll of Fayette County, Kentucky, where Mary's presumed grandfather James was listed. Scott County, where Mary's father John died, was formed from an offshoot of Fayette County. See Some Unconnected Kentucky Alexanders for more information.

December 21, 1813 James entered in the tract book 160 acres of SE qtr of Sec 24 of Twp 5 N Range 9 E in Lancaster Twp, Jefferson Co, IN.(2) In the 1820 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Jefferson Co, IN.(3) He and his wife were age 45+, with a man and woman 26-45, a boy 10-15, and two boys and a girl under age 10. There was one foreigner not naturalized, and two persons engaged in agriculture.

He may have been associated with William B. Alexander who also was listed in the 1820 Census in Jefferson Co, IN.(4) In the 1830 Census, James was listed as a head of household in Jefferson Co, IN.(5) He and his wife were in their 60s, with a boy and a girl 10-14.

He may have been associated with James Alexander who also was listed in the 1830 Census in Lancaster Twp, Jefferson Co, IN.(6) James Alexander wrote his will November 12, 1843 in Jefferson Co, IN.(7) He left to his son William a mare and saddle, and named son Joseph. He left a horse to daughter Nancy, and named daughters Polly Hopper, Nancy Boon, and Agnes Butner, and granddaughter Agnes Butner. His executors were John Burns, Sr., Robert Williams, and Jonathan Hill.

James's estate was probated December 19, 1843 in Jefferson Co, IN.(8)

A Biographical Sketch of Elder James Alexander is online.

In 1811 Isaac was taxed for himself and one horse in Madison Co, KY.(43) By 1812, he had come to Jefferson County, Indiana, where he would reside until his retirement. On Sept. 12, 1812, he enlisted as a private in Capt. Benjamin Miller's company of the 6th regiment of the Indiana militia, but apparently didn't get into any fighting. After 1815, he began raising his family.

In the 1830 Census, Isaac was listed as a head of household in Jefferson Co, IN.(44) He and his wife were in their 30s, with three girls 10-14, a girl 5-9, and two girls under age 5.

On March 8, 1833, he bought 135 acres on Big Creek, near Dunlop in the northern part of Jefferson County. On the 15th of the same month, he sold off two small pieces of his new land, 25 acres to Peter Smith and 10 acres to Jacob Nichols Jr. His wife, Agnes, signed the two sales deeds.(45)

None of her other children were married in the Society of Friends.

In Isaac's probate, she is referred to as Martha Robinson, but little seems to be known of her by the administrator, as her children's names are unknown. Otherwise, there is no evidence to connect this marriage to Isaac's Martha.
